Abstract:
A U-shaped deflector is provided to deflect the flow of gas from the region of a mist eliminator, in a wet gas scrubber, which is being washed. The deflector is mounted to move backwardly and forwardly with the wash lance under an eliminator plate, while permitting rotatable oscillation of the lance. The deflector is suspended from an overhead beam and serves to partially support the wash lance.
Abstract:
A reactor vessel is provided with vertical support means in the form of circumferentially spaced columns upon which the vessel is mounted. The columns are adapted to undergo flexure in order to accommodate the thermally induced displacements experienced by the vessel during operational transients.
Abstract:
Removal of sediment caused by the settling of suspended particulate material in the secondary liquid circulated through a vapor generator of the shell and tube type is effected by providing a baffle plate closely spaced from the tube sheet therein to define a plenum therebetween. One or more blowdown lines extend from the plenum and the baffle plate contains a plurality of drilled holes through which a limited portion of the secondary liquid passes at a high velocity conducting sediment with it to the blowdown plenum for removal through the blowdown lines.
Abstract:
Apparatus for preventing parts of a high pressure nuclear reactor vessel from significantly moving apart if the vessel becomes ruptured or fractured. The apparatus consists of a network of tensioned cables enclosing the vessel, and also a set of cables for preventing the vessel from being dislodged from its support arrangement. The restraining cables are positioned around the reactor vessel in a manner which will permit removal of a hemispherical head portion without having to disassemble the cables.
Abstract:
An apparatus and method of operation thereof, to continuously monitor and control the neutron absorption properties of chemical shim used in regulating reactivity of a pressurized water nuclear reactor. Coolant-moderator fluid, containing soluble chemical shim with a neutron absorption property is continuously passed through a chamber having at least one neutron detector spaced from a neutron source of known strength. Utilizing the neutron absorptiometery principle, a signal relating to the concentration of the chemical shim in the coolant-moderator is derived. In addition, the temperature of the sample of coolant is obtained and a temperature compensation signal is generated. The signal related to chemical shim concentration is modified by the temperature compensation signal to correct for temperature related effects. The corrected signal is then applied to a readout and alarm device so that constant monitoring of the shim concentration may be accomplished; additionally, the signal may be applied to maintain the concentration of the chemical shim in the coolant-moderator at a desired level.
Abstract:
A nuclear reactor new fuel handling system which conveys new fuel from a fuel preparation room into the reactor containment boundry. The handling system is provided with a fuel preheating station which is adapted to heat the new fuel to reactor refueling temperatures in such a way that the fuel is heated from the top down so that fuel element cladding failure due to thermal expansion is avoided.
