Abstract:
The present invention includes embodiments of an apparatus and method for selecting a line from two or more lines on a communication device. The communication device comprises a display module, an input module, a line selection module, and a communication module for making a call over a network to a target recipient. The method comprises the steps of storing line selection information; monitoring the input module for initiation of a call to the target recipient; upon detecting the initiation of the call, selecting a line from the at least two lines in the line selection module, the selected line is dependent on said line selection information; and making the call to the target recipient on the selected line.
Abstract:
A wireless-enabled smart card reader receives an Answer to Reset (ATR) from a smart card and transmits the ATR using a wireless communication link to a computing device without waiting for an ATR request from the computing device. The computing device may cache the ATR and use it for subsequent communication sessions with the smart card.
Abstract:
Embodiments of the invention are concerned with improvements to antenna systems, in particular beamforming antenna systems. Embodiments provide an improved beamformer arrangement for receiving and transmitting of signals by antenna elements. Embodiments are particularly well suited to use for transceiving of radio signals by base stations, such as are commonly found in cellular networks. In one aspect, embodiments provide a beamformer for use in processing signals received, or transmitted, by a first antenna element, the beamformer comprising a first set of ports and a second set of ports, wherein the first set of ports is connected to at least two antenna elements including said first antenna element and the second set of ports is connected to a connecting port, wherein the beamformer is arranged to generate at least first and second output beams from signals received from the at least two antenna elements and to transform signals received via the second set of ports into signals for transmission by the at least two antenna elements, wherein the beamformer is arranged to combine said generated at least first and second output beams at the connecting port such that said signals from said first antenna element are constructively combined at the connecting port, and to combine said at least first and second output beams at the connecting port such that signals from antenna elements other than the first antenna element are destructively combined at the connecting port, wherein the connecting port is arranged so as to provide access to individual said signals received, or transmitted, by said at least two antenna elements. In particularly preferred arrangements the first set of ports is connected to three or four antenna elements.
Abstract:
A device coupled to a smart card reader may request random data from a smart card inserted into the smart card reader, and the smart card reader may incorporate the random data into its randomness pool. A device having a source of random data may have a driver installed thereon for another device and the driver may extract random data from the source and transmit it securely over a wireless communication link to the other device. The other device, which may be a smart card reader, may incorporate the extracted random data into its randomness pool. A smart card reader may incorporate traffic received from a smart card inserted therein into its randomness pool.
Abstract:
Communications between a computing device and a smart card reader configured for communication with a smart card are facilitated through the use, by the computing device, of a smart card resource manager and a smart card reader service. The smart card reader service acts as a relay for commands between the smart card resource manager and the smart card reader. Appropriate configuration of the smart card reader service obviates a redundant downloading of certificates from smart card to computing device subsequent to loss of a connection between the computing device and the smart card reader. However, upon re-establishing a previously lost connection to a smart card reader and determining that a communication link between a smart card and the smart card reader has been ended and reestablished during the loss of connection, the smart card reader service may indicate to the smart card resource manager that smart card is absent and, subsequently, that the smart card is present.
Abstract:
A circuit board tester that uses a dual-stage translation to bring a unit under test (UUT) into physical and electric contact first with a series of tall probes, then with a series of short probes. Initially, the UUT is mounted on a support plate, and spaced apart from both the tall and short probes. First, in order to perform a functional test on the UUT, a first vacuum stage is engaged, and atmospheric pressure translates the UUT longitudinally until contact is made with a first hard stop, defining a first position. At this first position, the UUT is in contact with a series of tall probes, and is spaced apart from a series of short probes. After a function test is performed, a second vacuum stage is engaged in addition to, and independent of, the first vacuum stage. Atmospheric pressure translates the UUT longitudinally until contact is made with a second hard stop, defining a second position.
Abstract:
The proposed solution relates to methods and systems for automatically synchronizing data between an email server and a handheld computing device based on an event occurring on a personal computer communicating with the server. A module in the personal computer monitors events in the operating system of the personal computer that signifies that the user is either away from the vicinity of the computer or is about to leave the computer. Upon detecting these events, the module initiates an automatic synchronization of data between the server and the handheld computing device. This way, emails which have already been seen or responded to by the user on the computer will appear as such on the handheld computing device.
Abstract:
A wireless communications link may be made more secure by imposing additional security measures at the application level to create a secure channel. These measures are compatible with and transparent to any security measures which are applied at the link level. A secure keep-alive heartbeat may be created on the secure channel to ensure that both devices are within range and able to communicate throughout the connection.
Abstract:
A system and method routes messages based on an intended recipient's availability to receive messages. Each network user's current status is determined by tracking when the user activates and deactivates an auto-reply feature. The user's current status, return date and alternate contact(s) are specified in the auto-reply and stored and updated on a user status server which periodically communicates to each user the current status information for each contact listed in that user's address book. When the current status information indicates that the intended recipient is unavailable, message routing options are presented to the sender. These options include sending the message to the user regardless of the intended recipient's current unavailability, not sending the message at all, routing the message to at least one specified alternate contact, sending the message to the intended recipient while sending a copy of the message to the alternate contact.
Abstract:
A portable wireless user communication device is wirelessly coupled to a second device over a monitored link. If the link is lost or endangered, then a user alarm is activated at the portable wireless user device and/or at the second device to which it is linked (which may also be a portable electronic device). The type of monitoring and/or the type of alarming may be user selectable.
