A device for determining drop volume for a drop ejection device is disclosed. The drop ejection device has a drop ejector and a reference drop ejector that exhibits less drop volume variation than the drop ejector. The drop ejection device includes a sensor responsive to impinging drops for producing a signal proportional to drop volume. The sensor is responsive to drops from the drop ejector to produce an electrical signal. The sensor is responsive to drops from the reference drop ejector to produce a reference electrical signal. Also included is a processing device responsive to the electrical signal and reference electrical signal for determining drop volume of the drop ejector relative to drop volume of the reference drop ejector.

The present invention is a fluid level sensing system which has a single light source for providing light rays and a single light receiving device for receiving the light rays. The fluid level sensing system also has a fluid container which has a plurality of controlled surfaces arranged on the fluid container. Each controlled surface exhibits a first reflected light characteristic if fluid within the fluid container is in contact with the controlled surface and a second reflected light characteristic if the fluid is not in contact with the controlled surface. The controlled surfaces are disposed on the fluid container so that the light rays from the single light source impinge upon each of the controlled surfaces to produce either the first or the second reflected light characteristics and are thereby detected by the light receiving device to determine the fluid level in the fluid container.

A microcontroller fabricated on a semiconductor chip has an on-chip EPROM program memory. The microcontroller is selectively configurable to operate in any one of a plurality of predetermined operating modes, including at least one secure microcontroller mode. A plurality of EPROM configuration fuses used for configuring the microcontroller and protecting its program memory from read, verify or write through any instruction initiated from other than a predetermined secure area of the chip, are mapped into the on-chip EPROM program memory as bits in respective address locations thereof. The value of a bit representing any one of said fuses is effective to determine the condition of the respective fuse. That condition is observed by reading the value of the respective bit for that fuse stored in the EPROM program memory. The chip security is enabled by configuring the microcontroller in a code protected mode by programming the bits representing the desired fuses in the EPROM program memory to effectively blow or erase each fuse according to the desired configuration.

Interactive internet activities are a very popular means for gathering information for business, personal, medical, entertainment and other purposes. Most internet interaction is asymmetrical in nature in that a client's requests for information are much smaller (in data size) than the resulting information delivered by the server. Although the client/internet link is inherently asymmetrical, there remains a great deal of interaction and overhead required between the client and the server that increases the bandwidth needs for the client's upstream request channel. There are many advantages to reducing this upstream traffic volume and thereby making the internet interaction even more asymmetrical. Such compression of request data could allow more clients to utilize a single upstream data path instead of separate paths.

Most cable television systems in the United States (over 75% as of this application) are structured for one-way only service between the cable headend and the user. With more and more services being introduced that require a two-way connection with the user (e.g. impulse-pay-per-view, home shopping, Internet access), it has become necessary for more and more cable systems to upgrade to a two-way capability at considerable cost and over a fairly long period of time. The typical short-term solution to the lack of two-way capability is to send request backlinks over he user's telephone line. The problem with this solution is that when used, it ties up the telephone line and requires an additional telephone connection to be located near the cable set-top-box or modem. A more practical solution is the hub centered backhaul invention described herein. With this invention, users can operate their cable systems as if they were two-way systems, with all available interactive capabilities available. The request channel, however, will be intercepted at a central location between multiple users, and returned to the cable headend via an alternate communication path. The backlink request will be intercepted at a location in the cable distribution prior to hardware that precludes two-way transmissions, such as amplifiers.

The present disclosure relates to an inkjet printing system for depositing ink on media. The inkjet printing system includes an ink containment vessel formed from a material having optical characteristics selected to block light in the visible light spectrum. Also included is an energy source for providing energy having characteristics that are selected to allow energy passage through the ink containment vessel. Finally, an energy detector is included for detecting energy provided by the energy source that passes through the ink containment vessel. Energy from the energy source impinging upon ink is altered so that an energy detector output signal is indicative of ink within of the ink containment vessel.

An information broadcast system having a broadband broadcast system selected from cable and satellite for broadcasting requested information from a selected information source, including the Internet, to one or more selected subscriber stations includes an independent backhaul channel for communicating information request signals from a subscriber station to one or more central processing stations. The system includes a data broadcast station for transmitting requested data from the selected data source and central station via the data broadcast station to the one or more selected subscriber stations. The high-data rate broadcast station forwards requested data from a data source to the data broadcast station. A backhaul satellite communication system, independent of the broadband broadcast system, has a backhaul satellite ground terminal for coupling information request signals from backhaul satellite communication system to high data broadcast station terminal. Each subscriber station has a broadband broadcast receiver for receiving requested information broadcast by the high data rate broadcast and a satellite antenna for transmitting backhaul request signals to the backhaul satellite.

A RISC-based microcontroller is described which uses "split" data buses in the functional areas of the ALU and the I/O peripheral control interface. Also, the "Harvard" architecture is applied with separate buses for instructions and operational data which are stored and supplied from separate memories, i.e., an instruction memory and a data memory. This architecture allows to run the microcontroller with timing and clocking schemes of higher frequencies resulting in faster speed and higher processing rates in MIPS. The different functional components of the microcontroller can be placed on a single VLSI chip while other designs with much less on-chip functions are also conceivable.
