A system for providing online content, in particular interactive gaming, over a network includes a server terminal as part of a head end facility and a client console located in one or more household facilities. A multi-band CATV network connection is established for connecting the client console with the server terminal. A display device, which may be connected to the client console or set up as a standalone device, is provided as part of the household facility and is connected with the server terminal through a band of the network connection.

A TV broadcast cooperative type data perusal apparatus is provided that can establish connection to websites in which is provided information related to the subject matter of a program that is being broadcast, and can simply peruse the information related to the subject matter from these websites, even when no website address information is appended as descriptor information for searching to the program being broadcast, provided that the information related to the subject matter in the program being broadcast is appended to the program as the descriptor information for searching.

A data conversion apparatus included an information input device, a holder for holding information designating a method of the conversion processing from input portion when the kind of the input information is examined and is judged as predetermined data for executing a data conversion processing, a convertor for executing the data in accordance with a predetermined rule, a synthesizer for generating new data by combining the input information with a predetermined data content, and an information output device for outputting the new data so generated. When the kind of the data is screen configuration data describing configuration of the screen output of an information processing unit, the predetermined rule adds a display area of the screen configuration and converts it to a screen configuration data capable of displaying a plurality of screen configurations on the same screen.

A reverse path signaling circuit is described which provides less noise and interruption when injecting signals upstream to a head end. The reverse path signaling circuit includes a low pass filter, a status monitor, and a common emitter amplifier. The common emitter amplifier has a emitter region which couples to the status monitor. The status monitor couples to the common emitter amplifier as a single-ended input to the to the emitter region. The status monitor injects status monitor signals into the emitter region for passing the status monitor signals upstream to a head end. The low pass filter is coupled to another input on the common emitter amplifier. An output from the common emitter amplifier is taken at a collector region. The reverse path signaling circuit of the present invention does not require the use of a directional coupler as part of the circuit. Systems and methods are further included within the scope of the present invention.
Abstract:
In a cable data system, several frequency division multiplexed upstream data signals on an individual cable can be selectively routed to frequency-selective band pass filters using a relay matrix between the filters and the cable. By appropriately controlling the relays, the upstream information can be split out to as many different filters that might be required to recover the frequency division multiplexed information. Cabling installation to a cable modem termination system is simplified and maintenance costs are reduced by carrying multiple signals on one cable.

A broadcasting system which includes a broadcasting apparatus and a reception apparatus and which achieves interactiveness using a broadcast wave. The broadcasting apparatus includes a content storing unit for storing the plurality of contents, each content including a set of video data and a set of control information that indicates another content that is a link destination for a present content, and a transmitting unit for multiplexing a set of video data and a plurality of sets of the same control information included in a same content as the set of video data, and for transmitting the multiplexed sets of video data and control information. The reception apparatus includes an extracting unit for extracting a set of video data and a set of control information in a same content as the set of video data, a storing unit for storing the extracted set of control information, a reproducing unit for reproducing the extracted set of video data and outputting an image signal, an operation unit for receiving a user operation that indicates a content switching, and a control unit for controlling the extracting unit to extract another content indicated by the set of control information stored in the storing unit, in accordance with the user operation.

A video-on-demand system transfers a control screen signal to a second communication system and receives a viewer control signal from the second communication system. The video-on-demand system transfers video signals to either a first communication system or the second communication system based on the viewer control signal. The second communication system uses less bandwidth to transfer the video signals than the first communications system. The control screen could be a web page that includes: 1) a video display menu with a selection of displays and bandwidths to display the video signals, 2) a video content menu with a video preview selection, and/or 3) a video display control menu comprising play, pause, rewind, fast forward, and stop. The video-on-demand system implements the control screen menu selections.
Abstract:
A dual mode tuner/receiver is disclosed in which both analog and digital signals can be received and processed. A low pass filter allows all channels below a selected frequency enter the circuit. A precisely controlled dual conversion circuit creates an intermediate frequency (IF) signal. An automatic carrier detection circuit monitors the IF signal and determines whether the signal is of analog or digital format and intermediate frequency filters are adjusted based upon the type of signal detected. A coherent oscillator circuit generates in-phase and quadrature reference signals that are used by video and audio detectors for further processing of the IF signal. In-phase and quadrature outputs are provided for digital signals and composite video and audio outputs are provided for analog signals.

A method and apparatus of enhancing communications in a set-top box having a high speed modem and a lower speed modem. A selected one of the modems can be used, depending upon noise and speed considerations, to receive a response packet by selectively substituting the appropriate IP address as the source address in a request message.

Methods and devices, using time stamped remote instructions, procedures and data are presented for the efficient streaming of multimedia data and instructions. These methods are particularly suited for low latency streaming of a plurality of multimedia data types and can work in conjunction with industry standards such as MP3, JPEG and MPEG. These methods are also suited for flexible and dynamic streaming that can take into account different bandwidths and transmission times between a server and a clients' machines.
