A shared key management method for a Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) system in which a master terminal unit (MTU), a plurality of sub master terminal units (SUB-MTUs), and a plurality of remote terminal units (RTUs) are configured in a sequential hierarchy, is provided. The method includes: (a) at the MTU, generating a plurality of secret keys and respectively allocating the secret keys to the RTUs; (b) at the MTU, generating a group key in a tree structure, wherein a leaf node of the tree structure corresponds to each RTU, a parent node of a node corresponding to an RTU corresponds to a SUB-RTU to which the RTU is connected, a shared key of each node of the group key is generated by hashing shared keys of all child nodes, and a shared key of a leaf node of the group key is set as a secret key of the RTU; (c) at the RTU or the SUM-MTU, receiving and storing shared keys of every node from a node corresponding to itself to a root node; (d) when the RTU or the SUM-MTU is added or deleted, at the MTU, generating shared keys of nodes along a path from a node corresponding to the added or deleted terminal unit to the root node again; and (e) at the RTU or the SUB-MTU, receiving and storing the generated shared keys. According to the key management method for the SCADA system described above, in the case of encrypting and broadcasting or multicasting a message, a computation amount can be reduced.

An apparatus and a method for providing a handover using an Mobile Station IDentifier (MS ID) in a wireless communication system are provided. In the method, at least one Base Station (BS) ID index assigned to a serving base station by at least one neighbor base station is confirmed. A target base station for a handover is confirmed. A temporary MS ID is formed using a BS ID index assigned to the serving base station by the target base station, and an MS ID index assigned to the mobile station by the serving base station. A network re-entry procedure with the target base station is performed using the temporary MS ID. Communication with the serving base station is performed until the network re-entry procedure with the target base station is completed.

A method for supporting handover in a BWA communication system is provided. The system includes an MS, a serving BS, and a plurality of neighbor BSs. The coverage area of each of the BSs is divided into sectors using different subcarrier bands. The MS collects information broadcast from the serving BS on the serving BS and the neighbor BS, measures a signal level for each of the sectors of the serving BS and the neighbor BSs according to the collected information, and sends a handover request based on the measured signal level for each of the sectors. The serving BS broadcasts information on the serving BS and the neighbor BS to the MS, determines if the MS can perform a soft handover from its current sector to another sector upon receiving the handover request from the MS, and permits the MS to perform the soft handover if possible.
