Abstract: An electrosurgical instrument includes an end effector assembly including first and second jaw members. At least one of the first or second jaw members is movable relative to the other from a spaced-apart position to an approximated position to grasp tissue therebetween. A thermal cutting wire is disposed on at least a portion of at least one of the first or second jaw members. The thermal cutting wire is configured for ferromagnetic heating to provide automatic Curie temperature control upon supply of an AC signal thereto. The thermal cutting wire may include a conductive core, an inner ferromagnetic coating disposed about the conductive core, and an outer ferromagnetic coating disposed about the inner ferromagnetic coating. The thermal cutting wire may alternatively or additionally include an exposed outer surface defining a roughness configured to facilitate attenuation during ferromagnetic heating.

Abstract: A method of manufacturing a matched pair of opposing jaw members of an end-effector assembly includes assembling a first jaw member having a knife channel, assembling a second jaw member having a knife channel, setting a jaw gap and aligning a first sealing plate of the first jaw member and a second sealing plate of the second jaw member in relation to one another by bringing the first jaw member and the second jaw member into clamped engagement with an alignment spacer. The alignment spacer is configured to engage the knife channel of the first jaw member and the knife channel of the second jaw member. The method also includes coupling the first jaw member to the second jaw member.

Abstract: A surgical instrument configured to facilitate access to interior components thereof for cleaning and refurbishment purposes includes a housing assembly, an elongated shaft assembly and an end effector. The housing assembly includes an actuator, and the elongated shaft assembly includes an interior control member operatively coupled to the actuator. The elongated shaft assembly also includes outer cover including first and second cover members and a hinge coupling the first and second cover members to one another such that the outer cover may be selectively moved between a closed configuration wherein the interior control member is enclosed within the outer cover and an open configuration wherein the interior control member is exposed. The end effector is supported at a distal end of the elongated shaft assembly, and is operatively associated with the interior control member.

Abstract: A bipolar electrosurgical instrument includes first and second shafts each having a jaw member extending from its distal end. Each jaw member is adapted to connect to a source of electrosurgical energy such that the jaw members are capable of selectively conducting energy through tissue held therebetween. A knife channel is configured to reciprocate a cutting mechanism therealong. An actuator selectively advances the cutting mechanism. A switch is disposed on the first shaft and is configured to be depressed between a first position and at least one subsequent position upon biasing engagement with a mechanical interface disposed on the second shaft. The first position of the switch relays information to the user corresponding to a desired pressure on tissue and the at least one subsequent position is configured to activate the source of electrosurgical energy to supply electrosurgical energy to the jaw members.

Abstract: An electrosurgical forceps is provided with a shaft that extends from a housing of the electrosurgical forceps. An end effector assembly includes a pair of first and second jaw members pivotably coupled to one another via a pivot pin. One or both of the first and second jaw members may be movable from an open position for positioning tissue therebetween to a clamping position for grasping tissue. A detent is operably disposed proximal the pivot pin and extends radially outward from a proximal flange of one of the jaw members. The detent is configured to releasably engage a corresponding slot disposed on a proximal flange of the other jaw member. The detent and slot are configured to control a gap distance between the first and second jaw members when the first and second jaw members are in the clamping position.

Abstract: An electrosurgical pencil with integrated tweezers includes-an elongated housing having an open distal end and an actuator operatively associated therewith. First and second jaw members extend distally through the open distal end of the elongated housing and are transitionable between a closed position and an open position upon actuation of an actuator. One or both of the jaw members is configured to treat tissue with monopolar energy and both jaw members are configured to treat tissue with bipolar energy. One or more switches is operably coupled to a controller disposed in the housing and configured to activate the first and second jaw members to treat tissue with monopolar and bipolar energy.

Abstract: An electrosurgical instrument end effector has first and second jaw members each including an electrically conductive tissue-contacting surface. The first and second jaw members are configured to grasp and electrosurgically treat tissue between the tissue-contacting surfaces. A thermal cutting element includes a body portion extending along the tissue-contacting surface of the second jaw member and a distal probe portion extending distally therefrom. The distal probe portion extends distally beyond a distal-most extent of the second jaw member, has a free end distally-spaced from this distal-most extent, and is exposed about the entire outer periphery thereof between the distal-most extent the free end. The body portion of the thermal cutting element is energizable for thermally treating tissue grasped between the tissue-contacting surfaces, while the distal probe portion of the thermal cutting element is energizable for thermally treating tissue positioned distally of the first and second jaw members.
