摘要: A method, system, and computer-readable code for a technique with which data having dynamically variable record formats (such as that created when a dynamic schema is used with a data repository) can be easily and efficiently accommodated, without requiring modification of the code that processes the data each time the underlying data format changes. This mechanism provides a novel way to gather data that may have had changes to its format, and create a structured representation of this data that flexibly adapts to format variations. This novel technique enables all added data fields in a record to be made available for processing and removed data fields to be omitted, without requiring advance knowledge of the added and removed fields. In the preferred embodiment, a DOM tree created from an XML representation of the source data is used by the present invention as it creates an output DOM tree. Optionally, the results of an LDAP query from an LDAP directory can be used as the source data.

摘要: A method and apparatus for selecting objects in a virtual world through the use of inner and outer selection ranges. Inner selection ranges define the distance from an object an avatar must be to trigger a selection event to initiate interaction with the object. Outer selection ranges define the distance from an object an avatar may travel before triggering a de-selection event to the object which terminates interaction with the object. The method and apparatus is defined for implementation in virtual objects or virtual world frameworks.

摘要: A system-integrated input device for manipulating objects on the display of a computer screen. The device is integrated as a pointer stick, which may be located on an existing keyboard, on an existing mouse device, or elsewhere. Both 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional user input are supported. In a first embodiment, the device is easily convertible between 2D and 3D input mode. Preferably, this conversion occurs by pressing down on the pointer stick, which is implemented as a spring-loaded device. The device supports input in the X and Y direction while in 2D mode, and adds the Z direction while in 3D mode. Movement in the Z direction is indicated by rotating the pointer stick to the left or right. In a second embodiment, movement in the Z direction is indicated by pushing and pulling on a sliding, or telescoping, pointer stick.

摘要: A system, method, or computer program product for navigating an object in a virtual reality world in accordance with the present invention provides for receiving a pivot control signal from a user via a graphic user interface (GUI) control, and pivoting the object in response to the pivot control signal. The GUI control preferably comprises a compass control configured for receiving the pivot control signals from a user through a point and click device such as a mouse. By clicking on the compass control interface, the user can cause the object, such as an avatar, to rotate a relative number of degrees from its original direction substantially instantaneously, or alternatively, the user may depress a mouse button and drag the pointer about the compass control so as to cause the object to turn under essentially real time control of the user while displaying a view of the object during the pivot. Further, an incoming stimulus indicator may be provided in the compass control so that the user can pivot to face the incoming stimulus.

摘要: A method, data processing system and program product for providing a location sensitive user interface by acquiring a geographic location of the portable data processor and selecting a user interface environment associated with the acquired location of the portable data processor. The selected user interface environment is activated as the user interface environment of the portable data processor. The portable data processor may also determine if it is in motion. A user interface environment associated with the portable data processor being in motion is then selected and activated. Location sensitive data may also be provided based upon the acquired location of the portable data processor. The location of the portable data processor may be acquired from an automated position sensing system.

摘要: A method and apparatus for automatically changing a user's avatar's displayed view perspective in a virtual world upon execution of a gesture by the avatar, and in which the view perspective is changed for each gesture. The configuration of the view perspective switching specifies an action, a speed, a position and a return time. An avatar implementing the present invention allows the user to avoid manual view perspective switching which interferes with the immersive environment of a virtual world.

摘要: Methods, data processing systems and program products provide delayed generation and encoding of data transmissions by storing a reference to a message to be transmitted as an entry in a transmission request queue. After establishing a communication connection between a host data processor and the portable data processor, the message corresponding to the entry in the transmission request queue is generated, encoded and then transmitted to the host data processor over the communication connection. If user input is received which requests that information resident in the data processor be modified, the data processor determines if the information associated with the modification request includes information contained in a message associated with an entry in the transmission request queue. If the information associated with the modification request includes information contained in a message associated with an entry in the transmission request queue then a copy of the information associated with the modification request is created. A copy is created to provide a version of the unmodified information for use in generating the message associated with the entry in the transmission request queue and to provide a version of the information for modification by the user.

摘要: Computer implemented method, system and computer usable program code for sharing resources among a plurality of containers in a data processing system. A computer implemented method includes creating a shared container for at least one resource to be shared. Then the at least one resource to be shared is moved from an original container of the at least one resource to the shared container, and a link is created between the original container and the at least one resource to be shared in the shared resource container. A link can also be created between a subject resource container and a shared resource in the shared resource container to enable the subject resource container to access and use the shared resource. A shared resource can also be removed from the shared resource container and returned to an original resource container when sharing of the resource is no longer desired.
