摘要:
The present invention embraces an optical fiber that includes a central core having a graded-index profile with respect to an outer cladding. The optical fiber also includes an inner cladding, a depressed trench, and an outer cladding. The optical fiber achieves reduced bending losses and a high bandwidth with a reduced cladding effect for high-data-rate applications.
摘要:
A depressed graded-index multimode optical fiber includes a central core, an inner depressed cladding, a depressed trench, an outer depressed cladding, and an outer cladding. The central core has an alpha-index profile. The depressed claddings limit the impact of leaky modes on optical-fiber performance characteristics (e.g., bandwidth, core size, and/or numerical aperture).

The present invention embraces a multimode optical fiber that includes a glass-based central core having an alpha-index profile and a glass-based cladding immediately surrounding the optical fiber's central core. Typically, the refractive index difference between the central core's minimum refractive index and the cladding's maximum refractive index is greater than 2×10−3. The multimode optical fiber exhibits reduced bending losses and reduced coupling losses when connected to a standard graded-index fiber.
摘要:
A method of classifying a graded-index multimode optical fiber includes taking a series of individual measurements at a single wavelength, and using the measurements to characterize the departure of the multimode optical fiber's actual index profile from the corresponding nominal index profile. The measurements, coupled with intermodal dispersion or EMB measurement, may be used to predict the approximate transmission properties of the optical fiber at wavelengths other than the measurement wavelength.

A single-mode optical fiber includes a central core, an intermediate cladding, a depressed trench, and an external optical cladding. The central core has a radius r1 and a positive refractive index difference Δn1 with the optical cladding. The intermediate cladding has a radius r2 and a refractive index difference Δn2 with the optical cladding, wherein Δn2 is less than Δn1. The depressed trench has a radius r3 and a negative index difference Δn3 with the optical cladding. At a wavelength of 1310 nanometers, the optical fiber has a mode field diameter (MFD) between 8.6 microns and 9.5 microns and, at a wavelength of 1550 nanometers, the optical fiber has bending losses less than about 0.25×10−3 dB/turn for a radius of curvature of 15 millimeters. At a wavelength of 1260 nanometers, attenuation of the LP11 mode to 19.3 dB is achieved over less than 90 meters of fiber.

The present wavelength multiplexed optical system includes a multimode optical fiber that transmits wavelength multiplexed optical signals and a plurality of multimode modal dispersion compensation optical fibers. Each modal dispersion compensation optical fiber can transmit one of the multiplex wavelengths, and each modal dispersion compensation optical fiber has an optimized index profile such that the modal dispersion for the transmitted wavelength is approximately inversely equal to the modal dispersion induced in the multimode optical fiber. The wavelength multiplexed optical system facilitates an increased bitrate without reducing bandwidth.

A chromatic dispersion compensating and dispersion slope compensating optical fiber comprises a central core having an index difference Δn1 with an outer optical cladding, a first buried inner cladding having an index difference Δn2 with the outer cladding, a ring having an index difference Δn3 with the outer cladding and a second buried inner cladding having an index difference Δn4 with the outer cladding. The index difference between the first buried inner cladding and the outer cladding Δn2 is less than or equal to −13.5.10−3 and the index difference between the second buried inner cladding and the outer cladding Δn4 is less than or equal to −3.10−3. The fiber has, for a wavelength of 1550 nm, a chromatic dispersion less than or equal to −50 ps/nm/km and a ratio of the chromatic dispersion over the chromatic dispersion slope DOS less than or equal to 70 nm. The second deeply buried inner cladding allows obtaining a low DOS value whilst maintaining acceptable optical characteristics.
