    摘要: A polarized lightwave reflectometry method including the steps of sending at least two polarized light signals into the optical fiber to be tested, the signals presenting a determined angular offset relative to each other so that the polarization mode dispersion coefficient remains independent of any rotation of polarization in the optical fiber under test; extracting a scalar parameter of the relative noise type for each trace obtained by back-scattering of the light signal; and estimating the polarization mode dispersion coefficient by a function having a single scalar input, which function is of the type based on exponentials and has the form exp (a+bP+cP−1).

    摘要: Apparatus for detecting irregularities in the diameter of a filament has a small light source placed at the focus of an objective lens system. A horizontal slot constitutes a diaphragm for the objective lens system. A first optical system forms an image of the slot in a plane in which the filament runs past. Detectors detect the beam intercepted by the filament. An optical splitting system (P1) is interposed in the path of the beam (A), downstream of the slot (3) and upstream of the filament (5). The system is designed to form two sharp images (3', 3") of the slot (3) in a plane (4). The detectors are two oppositely-connected detectors (D1, D2) each receiving a respective beam (C, C') intercepted by the filament (5).

    摘要: A method of classifying a graded-index multimode optical fiber includes taking a series of individual measurements at a single wavelength, and using the measurements to characterize the departure of the multimode optical fiber's actual index profile from the corresponding nominal index profile. The measurements, coupled with intermodal dispersion or EMB measurement, may be used to predict the approximate transmission properties of the optical fiber at wavelengths other than the measurement wavelength. It is desirable for a graded-index multimode optical fiber to possess, at a wavelength of 850 nanometers, a radial offset bandwidth of at least 6000 MHz·km for all radial offsets between 0 and about 70 percent of the radius of the optical fiber's core.

The modified DMD graph accounts for chromatic dispersion to ensure that the multimode optical fiber has a calculated effective bandwidth EBc greater than 6000 MHz-km when used with multimode transverse sources.
