Abstract: A nitrogen oxides (NOx) and hydrocarbon (HC) storage catalyst for treating an exhaust gas flow is provided. The NOx and HC storage catalyst includes (a) a zeolite, (b) noble metal atoms, and (c) a metal oxide, a non-metal oxide, or a combination thereof. One or more of the noble metal atoms is present in a complex with the metal oxide, the non-metal oxide or a combination thereof. The complex is dispersed within a cage of the zeolite. Methods of preparing the NOx and HC storage catalyst and methods of using the NOx and HC storage catalyst for treating an exhaust gas stream flowing from a vehicle internal combustion engine during a period following a cold-start of the engine are also provided.

Abstract: A component of an exhaust system is provided. The component includes a housing extending from an inlet at a first end to an outlet at an opposing second end, an electrically conductive material disposed within the housing, and an induction coil configured to emit a magnetic field. The magnetic field is operable to heat the electrically conductive material from a first temperature of greater than or equal to about −20° C. to less than or equal to about 50° C. to a second temperature of greater than or equal to about 200° C. to less than or equal to about 700° C. in a time period of less than or equal to about 20 seconds.

Abstract: A method for fabricating an anode for a lithium ion battery cell is described and includes forming a solid electrolyte interface (SEI) layer on a raw anode prior to assembly into a battery cell by applying a first SEI-generating electrolyte to the raw anode to form a first intermediate anode, applying a second SEI-generating electrolyte to the first intermediate anode to form a second intermediate anode, and applying a third SEI-generating electrolyte to the second intermediate anode to form a cell anode, wherein the cell anode includes the raw anode having the SEI layer. Thus, a cell anode is formed by sequentially applying SEI-generating electrolytes to a raw anode to form the cell anode with an SEI layer, and a lithium ion battery cell is formed by assembling the cell anode into a cell pack, with a cathode, and a separator, and adding a cell electrolyte prior to sealing.

Abstract: Disclosed herein is a method comprising mixing an electroactive particle with a carbonaceous material to form a particle mixture that comprises a carbon coated particle; subjecting the carbon coated particle to a pulsed voltage between parallel plate electrodes or between rolls of a roll mill; and converting the carbon coated particle to a graphite coated particle via localized Joule heating. Disclosed herein too is an apparatus comprising a mixing device that is operative to mix an electroactive particle with a carbonaceous material to form a particle mixture that comprises a carbon coated particle; and a device for applying a pulsed voltage to the particle mixture; where the applying of the pulsed voltage is conducted when the particle mixture is located between opposing plate electrodes or between opposing rolls of a roll mill; where the device for applying the pulsed voltage converts the carbon coated particle into a graphite coated particle.

Abstract: A method for improving pedestrian safety is provided. The method includes determining operating conditions of a vehicle using a plurality of vehicle sensors. A path of the vehicle is predicted based on the determined operating conditions. Pedestrian parameters for a pedestrian in a vicinity of the vehicle are acquired using the plurality of vehicle sensors. The pedestrian parameters include at least one of a position, a speed of the pedestrian, gait, body posture and a level of distractedness. A determination is made whether a notification of the pedestrian is necessary based on the determined vehicle operating conditions and the acquired pedestrian parameters. A mode of notification of the pedestrian is selected from a plurality of modes of notification, in response to determining that the notification of the pedestrian is necessary. The pedestrian is notified using the selected mode of notification.

The vehicle-based portion also causes the image projection device to project the image on the surface with respect to the vehicle when projecting images is acceptable.
