Abstract: This disclosure provides systems, methods, and apparatus for mitigating the effects of interference signals on optical signals received at a direct-detection optical receivers. The optical receivers are capable of attenuating interference noise signals resulting from the interference between a transmitted optical signal transmitted from a transmitter to the optical receiver and one or more additional signals received at the optical receiver. The interference can be due to multi-path interference or due to in-band interference. The receivers include a tunable filter for filtering the received optical signal to remove the interference. A frequency offset module processes the received optical signal to determine a frequency offset indicative of the difference between the carrier frequencies of a modulated optical signal and an interference optical signal. The offset frequency and a bandwidth determined by the frequency offset module can be used to adjust the tunable filter to remove the interference signal from the received signal.

Abstract: Coherent optical communications technology for recovery of 1D and 2D formatted optical signals. For example, 1D or 2D formatted signals that travel through fiber optic media may be recovered by separating the light into X- and Y-polarization components, rotating one polarization component (e.g., Y-component) into the polarization space of the other component (e.g., Y-component into the X-polarization space), delaying the rotated component enough to avoid destructive interference and combining the delayed component with the undelayed component to form a folded optical signal, which may then be processed as a X-polarized signal.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for monitoring chirp in a modulated light beam. The modulated light is passed through a variable dispersion element or “VDE”, and the light from the variable dispersion element is detected to yield a signal. A parameter which represents the strength of modulation in the light after passage through the VDE such as the peak intensity of the modulated light is measured as the VDE is controlled to vary the applied dispersion. The chip is determined from the variation of the parameter with dispersion, such as from the dispersions at which the parameter is at minima. The method can be applied to beams modulated by common digital transmitters used in optical communication systems.

Two-dimensional optical transmissions may be generated by mapping a first data set to a first dimension of an optical signal and mapping a second data set to a second dimension of an optical signal. The encoded data for the first data set may be combined with the encoded data for the second data set so as to produce drive signals for a dual-drive modulator using a combination of both a common-mode and differential signal. The disclosed systems and methods also include dual-mode optical receivers that are configured to operate in either a one-dimensional or two-dimensional mode.

Abstract: An optical links diagnostic system (LDS) and its operation within an optical circuit switch (OCS) for measurement and diagnosis of fiber-optic network fiber performance and quality is disclosed. The LDS can contain two photodetectors, a laser source, and be coupled to an OCS. Optical circulators can further be linked to the OCS. The LDS can be used both as an optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) or as an optical return loss (ORL) meter and can automate the diagnosis of the fiber optical network fiber insertion loss and return loss.

Abstract: An optical transceiver may include an optical transmitter and an optical receiver. The optical transmitter and receiver may each include a grid including one or more lanes spaced apart. Each lane may correspond to a predetermined optical signal, or wavelength. The optical transmitter may include one or more sets of lasers to output one or more optical signals corresponding to the grid. Each set of laser may output a set of optical signals. Each set of lasers and, therefore, each set of optical signals may have a different passband. For example, the multiplexing and/or demultiplexing architecture may have a wide passband for the first set of optical signals and a narrow passband for the second set of optical signals. The narrow passband may be determined based on the space between two wider passbands.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and apparatus, including an apparatus for generating clusters of building blocks of compute nodes using an optical network. In one aspect, a method includes receiving request data specifying requested compute nodes for a computing workload. The request data specifies a target n-dimensional arrangement of the compute nodes. A selection is made, from a superpod that includes a set of building blocks that each include an m-dimensional arrangement of compute nodes, a subset of the building blocks that, when combined, match the target n-dimensional arrangement specified by the request data. The set of building blocks are connected to an optical network that includes one or more optical circuit switches. A workload cluster of compute nodes that includes the subset of the building blocks is generated. The generating includes configuring, for each dimension of the workload cluster, respective routing data for the one or more optical circuit switches.
