Abstract:
A method and apparatus for adapting a wireless terminal to different short-range wireless network requirements based on a region of operation associated with a location of the wireless terminal as described herein. The wireless terminal determines a region of operation associated with the location of the wireless terminal. Exemplary regions of operation may include a country or a group of countries. Based on the determined region of operation, a controller in the wireless terminal configures a short-range wireless transceiver in the wireless terminal to operate within one or more operating parameters.
Abstract:
The wireless communication device described herein includes a processor configured to detect a push-to-talk event and trigger a location operation responsive to the push-to-talk event. According to one exemplary embodiment, the processor determines a location of the wireless communication device and/or one or more remote wireless communication devices when the processor detects a floor control event. According to another exemplary embodiment, the processor determines a location of the wireless communication device and/or one or more remote wireless communication devices when the processor detects a session entrance event. As a result, a user may advantageously use location information about the wireless communication device and/or a remote wireless communication device to facilitate push-to-talk communications.
Abstract:
Methods of displaying broadcast media content information to a user include receiving at a first receiver first content from a first channel of a multi-channel broadcast media system while receiving at a second receiver information regarding the content on a second off-channel of the multi-channel broadcast media system. Then, at least some of the received information regarding the content on the second channel is displayed to the user. A database of information may also be provided that includes, for example, information regarding listening/viewing preferences of the user. This database of information may be used, for example, to select the off-channels that are scanned for content information and/or to select what information is displayed to the user.
Abstract:
A wireless communication device is configured to use location information available within the device to tailor the retrieval of electronic feed content. For example, the device may automatically use its current location to retrieve localized news feeds, localized podcasts, localized web pages, etc. In one embodiment, the device retrieves electronic feed content and then filters that content based on the location information to identify locally relevant content that may be displayed or otherwise made available to a user of the device. In another embodiment, the device provides all or part of its location information to a remote content server, and the content server sends localized content based on that information. In at least one embodiment, the device establishes and terminates subscriptions to localized feeds as needed responsive to changes in the device's current location. Further, the device may store or otherwise track locations and retrieve localized content for prior locations.
Abstract:
A communication network is operated by registering an Internet protocol (IP) device as a content provider. The registration of the IP device as a content provider is detected at least one subscriber IP device. A communication session is established between the IP device registered as a content provider and the at least one subscriber IP device. Content is provided from the IP device registered as the content provider to the at least one subscriber IP device.
Abstract:
A wireless communications device comprises a transceiver, memory, and a controller. The transceiver permits a user to communicate with a remote party via a wireless communications network. Whenever the user places an outgoing call, the controller stores characteristics of the outgoing call in memory. These include the phone number of the remote party, the time of day and/or day-of-week the outgoing call was made, the location of the wireless communications device when placing the outgoing call, and the identity of a short-range transceiver with which the wireless communications device established a communications link when placing the outgoing call. Periodically, the controller analyzes the stored characteristics, and determines a call pattern for the remote party based on the users call history. Based on the determined call pattern, the controller is able to predict when the user will likely place a subsequent outgoing call to the remote party.
Abstract:
Methods of displaying video content include obtaining a video content record to be displayed and determining an associated aging characteristic associated with the video content record. A current age is determined for the obtained video content record and a modified video content record is generated for display based on the determined aging characteristic and the determined current age of the obtained video content record. The obtained video content record may be an animation, which may include audio data. The obtained video content record may also be a still image.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for controlling a function of a communication device by a remote unit. The method may comprise receiving a user input identifying a selected function that can be performed by the communication device, and receiving a control signal corresponding to a selected control on the remote unit. The method may further comprise associating the selected function to the control signal such that in the future, receiving the control signal from the remote unit results in the communication device performing the selected function. The device may include a cellular radio transceiver; and a short-range wireless transceiver. The communication device may include a processor configured to communicate with a remote unit and receive user input identifying a selected function, and receive a control signal from the remote unit corresponding to a selected control on the remote unit. The processor is configured to associate the selected function to the control signal, and perform the selected function when the control signal is received from the remote unit.
Abstract:
A consumer electronics device comprises a receiver to receive a broadcast signal transmitted by a commercial broadcast radio station, a controller, and a communications interface. The broadcast radio signal comprises multimedia content that may be rendered to the user and information identifying the multimedia content. The controller generates a request to download the multimedia content using the information identifying the multimedia content. The communications interface transmits the request to a server in a communications network, which downloads the requested multimedia content to a user-designated destination device if the content is available.
Abstract:
A wireless communications system supports affinity groups of like minded individuals who wish to know locations of other members of the affinity group. The system supports members of the affinity group querying, through a mobile terminal for the location of a remote member of the affinity group as sensed by the remote member's mobile terminal. Rather than report raw geocoordinates, location place-name descriptions are defined by the members of the affinity group and shared amongst one another. Additionally, situational alarms may be generated in the event certain user defined criteria are met, such as two remote members of the affinity group being in close proximity to one another.
