Abstract: A compressor rotor compresses and delivers compressed air across a turbine rotor. The turbine rotor is connected to the compressor rotor such that rotation of the turbine rotor drives the compressor rotor. A shaft is connected to rotate with the turbine rotor and the compressor rotor. A thrust bearing is provided by a member extending perpendicular and radially outwardly of the shaft. The member rotates with the shaft and faces a first housing wall. A hollow chamber is formed on an opposed side of the first housing wall. A cooling air path supplies air across a thrust bearing surface, and between the member and the first housing wall. The first housing wall has a communication hole for communicating cooling air from the cooling air path into the hollow cavity to drive air within the hollow chamber. Also, a housing incorporating the communication hole is disclosed.

Abstract: An air bearing shaft for an air cycle machine is provided. The air bearing shaft includes a seal disk and a shaft body. The shaft body includes a first shaft body portion extending from a face of the seal disk to a knife-edge seal. The first shaft body portion includes journal bearing cooling holes positioned axially closer to the knife-edge seal than to the face of the seal disk. The journal bearing cooling holes extend through the first shaft body portion to a hollow interior and have a total cooling area. Start-up holes are positioned axially closer to the face of the seal disk than to the knife-edge seal. The start-up holes extend through the first shaft body portion to the hollow interior. The start-up holes have a total start-up area. A ratio of the total cooling area to the total start-up area is between 2.17 and 4.06.

The cylindrical insert having a first end, a second end, an inner surface, a step located at the first end, and an outer surface with an outer diameter that provides a diametric interference with the inner diameter of the journal bearing bore. The diametric interference being between about 0.000-0.003 inches (0.000-0.008 centimeters). The cylindrical insert being inserted into the inlet of the journal bearing bore up to the step. The step has an outer diameter greater than the outer diameter of the cylindrical insert. The inner surface of the cylindrical insert includes at least one selected inner diameter.

Abstract: A variable vaneless diffuser includes a shroud, a backing plate, a divider plate adjacent to the backing plate, a floor plate adjacent to the shroud, a plurality of standoffs formed on the divider plate, and a plurality of clearance slots formed in the floor plate. The divider plate is between the shroud and the backing plate. The floor plate is between the shroud and the divider plate and is movable relative to the divider plate. The plurality of standoffs and the plurality of clearance slots define a flow path for fluid flow. Each vane extends a vane height H away from the first stage disk portion and each vane has a first end positioned at a diameter D away from the central axis. Each first stage throat has a throat width W between radially adjacent first stage vanes. The first stage turbine nozzle also includes a coating on a sidewall of each first stage vane.

Abstract: A nozzle and shroud for use in an air cycle machine has a plate and a shroud curving in a first axial direction about a center axis of the shroud relative to the plate. The plurality of vanes extends for a height away from the plate and a width defined as the closest distance between two adjacent vanes, with a ratio of the height to the width being between 0.1091 and 0.1401. An air cycle machine and a method of repair are also disclosed.
