A selectable compatibility electrical connector plug has a substantially hollow housing member and a plurality of contact members extending from a cable connection end to a connector end. A circuit member having circuit components thereon is affixed within the housing with the circuit components being spaced from the contact members or leads. In open embodiment, actuator members contact the leads and project above the exterior surface of the housing. When the plug is inserted into a low performance jack, the actuator members force the leads against the circuit components to produce crosstalk and transmission loss characteristics of a low performance plug. When the plug is removed from the jack, the resilience of the leads forces the actuators up into a neutral position. The actuators may be buttons, toggles, or, in one embodiment, bowed portions of the leads which project above the surface of the housing.

Actuator means for moving the circuit member from a first position to a second position is mounted to the circuit member and adapted to be actuated when a low performance plug is inserted in the jack to cause the spring contact members to contact certain ones of the circuit elements. The opening in the front face has clearance slots providing clearance for a high performance plug when inserted into the jack.

The communication jack comprises a wire board and a number of contact wires that extend above the wire board and that are electrically coupled to respective contact regions on the wire board at first ends of the contact wires. Each of the freely disposed ends of the contact wires are cantilevered from respective fist ends of the contact wires such that the contact wires are capable of being deflected when the freely disposed ends wipe against respective contact wires of the mating communication plug. Some of the freely disposed ends are deflected to a lesser degree than at least two opposing, outer freely disposed ends when the freely disposed ends wipe against and are deflected by respective contact wires of a mating communication plug. The freely disposed ends that are deflected to a lesser degree than the opposing, outer freely disposed ends abut a surface of the wire board. The configuration of the wire board is such that the opposing, outer freely disposed ends avoid abutting the surface of the wire board when the freely disposed ends wipe against and are deflected by respective contact wires of a mating communication plug.

The communication plug includes an electrical connector assembly comprising a plurality of conductive blades. Each conductive blade is adapted to make electrical contact with an insulated conducting wire and with a jack spring contact. At least two of the conductive blades are configured so as to cross over each other without making electrical contact. Complementary crosstalk is generated between the conductive blades in the region where the blades engage the jack spring wires or terminals thus minimizing the propagation delay between the crosstalk signals generated in the plug and the crosstalk signals generated in the jack or connector.
