This invention relates to epoxy vinyl ethers having the formula: ##STR1## wherein R is a polyvalent linear, branched or cyclic hydrocarbon radical having from 2 to 20 carbon atoms, optionally substituted with alkyleneoxy; n has a value of from 1 to 20; p has a value of from 1 to 6; and at least one of Y and Y' is ##STR2## while any remaining Y and Y' can be ##STR3## The invention also relates to the synthesis and uses of the above polyphenyl vinyl ethers.

This invention relates to a radiation curable crosslinkable composition containing (a) from about 0.1 to about 5 wt. % of an initiator containing at least 25% cationic initiator, (b) from about 0 to about 60 wt. % of a polymerizable vinyl ether, epoxide, vinyloxy alkyl urethane or acrylate and (c) from about 35 to about 99.9% wt. % of a polyfunctional alkenyl ether having the formulaA[(CH.sub.2 O).sub.m (Z).sub.r CH.dbd.CHR].sub.nwherein A is a carbon atom, --OCH.dbd.CHR or [C.sub.1 to C.sub.10 alkyl].sub.4-n ; R is C.sub.1 to C.sub.6 alkyl; Z is C.sub.2 to C.sub.8 alkyleneoxy; r has a value of from 0 to 6; m has a value of from 0 to 1 and at least one of r and m has a positive value; n has a value of from 1 to 4, with the proviso that m is 0 and n is one when A is --OCH.dbd.CHR, n has a value of 2 or 3 when A is [C.sub.1 to C.sub.10 alkyl].sub.4-n and n has a value of 4 when A is carbon. The invention also relates to the process of curing said composition and to a cured film on a substrate coated with the above composition.

The invention relates to a copolymer having the structure ##STR1## wherein R.sub.3 is lower alkyl or hydrogen; x is an integer having a value of from 100 to 15,000; R.sub.1 is a saturated radical or a radical having a terminal vinyl group and is selected from the group consisting of alkoxylated vinyl; alkoxylated alkanol; alkyl optionally substituted with one or more vinyl ether, alkylate,hydroxy or alkoxylated vinyl groups and phenyl optionally substituted with one or more lower alkyl, hydroxy, alkoxylate or alkoxylated vinyl groups. The invention also relates to the use of said copolymer as a protective coating.

A radiation curable composition is provided herein which comprises suitably about 50-90 parts, preferably about 60-80 parts, by weight, of a multifunctional acrylate monomer, suitably with 3-6 acrylate groups, preferably pentaerythritol triacrylate or trimethylolpropane triacrylate, about 10-50 parts by weight, preferably about 20-40 parts, by weight, of a divinyl ether monomer having both a hydrophobic backbone and an abrasion-resistant moiety, which is preferably the divinylether of cyclohexane dimethanol, and a radiation curing initiator, suitably a cationic initiator, and preferably, in combination with a free radical initiator.

This invention relates to a process for hardening a curable normally liquid hydrocarbon compound optionally substituted with an alkyloxy, ester aldehyde, amido, halo, sulfonate, sulfate, sulfite, mercapto or nitro group and containing at least one functional radical selected from the group of ##STR1## and--(X)C.dbd.C(Z)--Y--(CH.sub.2)--wherein Y is --O--, --S-- or --NH-- and X and Z are each independently hydrogen, alkylene having from 1 to 20 carbon atoms, aryl or a mixture thereof, which process comprises contacting said liquid for less than one minute with a hardening amount of a volatilized hard Lewis acid under anhydrous conditions and at a hardening temperature below the deformation temperature of any substrate material which may be used to support said liquid.

The invention relates to a blend of divinyl ethers and their use as diluents for irradiation curable resins, which blend comprises between about 65 wt. % and about 35 wt. % of a hydrophobic divinyl ether containing from 6 to 30 carbon atoms and having a Tg of from about 20.degree. C. to about 150.degree. C. and between about 35 wt. % and about 65 wt. % of a hydrophilic polyethylene glycol divinyl ether.
