A method and connector are disclosed for making a zero insertion force connection between mating members while providing a contact wiping action. The connector has a housing, a plurality of terminals mounted in the housing, a cam mounted for longitudinal movement in the housing and a cam follower mounted between the cam and each row of terminals. Movement of the cam from a first to a second position causes the terminals to open to receive the mating member, return movement to the first position allows the terminals to engage the mating member, movement to a third position causes a first wiping action by the terminals and return to the first position causes a reverse wiping action.

An electrical connector is disclosed having the capability of mass terminating a plurality of individual conductors. The connector includes a housing having a plurality of terminals positioned therein in at least one row. Each terminal has a mating end directed toward a mating front face of the housing and an insulation displacing, conductor engaging portion which lies in an exposed rear portion of the housing. A cover member associated with the housing overlies the conductor engaging portion of the terminals and receives and drives the conductor into a respective terminal and to effect engagement of the terminal and the conductor.

A two-piece connector is disclosed for making zero insertion force interconnection between a mother board and a daughter board. The connector includes a plug mounted on the daughter board and a receptacle mounted on the mother board. A linear moving cam means acts on terminals carried by the receptacle to drive them normal to the elongated axis of the receptacle. When the receptacle terminals are opened by the cam means, the plug can be inserted into the receptacle either in a normal abutting fashion or end insertion by being moved laterally into the receptacle from one end. The terminals in the receptacle each have a blade which serves as the mating portion. The terminals carried by the plug each have a pair of closely spaced tines forming a pocket therebetween which receives a mating blade therein. The subject connector system is particularly useable for effecting a high density array interconnection between mother/daughter boards.

The subject contact is a compound spring formed from a single piece of metal stock, a portion of which is skived to achieve dual thickness stock. The contact is formed as a compound beam such that the loading thereof provides differential deflection of the contact so that a wiping action is performed at a point of engagement with a circuit board.
