    摘要: Measurements for handoff are made by a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) operating with a switched beam antenna in a wireless communication system. The switched beam antenna is a smart antenna generating a plurality of directional beams and an omni-directional beam. The WTRU measures signals from a plurality of cells with the omni-directional beam and/or one or more of the directional beams. The WTRU evaluates and reports to the network measurement of the omni-directional beam or the strongest beam for adding cells to an active set of cells. For removing cells from an active set of cells, the WTRU evaluates and reports to the network measurements of the antenna beam selected for communication with the active set cells.

    摘要: A wireless communication method and apparatus for selecting and reselecting cells used by a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) in a wireless multi-cell communication system. The WTRU includes a switched beam antenna configured to form a plurality of directional beams and an omni-directional beam pattern. The WTRU measures signals from a plurality of cells using the directional beams and the omni-directional beam pattern. The WTRU selects and registers with the cell having the strongest signal. In one embodiment, the WTRU selects a directional beam which has the strongest signal and uses it as an active beam to communicate with the selected cell. In another embodiment, the WTRU selects a cell/beam combination and registers with the selected cell using the selected beam. In yet another embodiment, the WTRU initiates a handoff to a neighboring cell that has a better signal measurement result than the selected cell.

A switch beam antenna system generates a plurality of beams in a predefined beam pattern and switches the current beam position to one of the plurality of predefined beams in accordance with measurement results for each of the beams. Quality of signals is periodically measured for each of the plurality of predefined beams, and the best beam is determined. The current beam is switched to either the best beam or an intermediate beam in accordance with the separation between the best beam and the current beam.

Next, a search is performed to determine the presence and configuration of neighboring base stations and current network conditions. Based on the search results, an improved operating configuration is determined for the base station and the base station's operating parameters are adjusted. Once the base station is admitted to and is operating in the network, the base station continues to monitor neighboring base stations and network conditions and adjusts its operating parameters accordingly.

The segmented communication is received and each segment of the segmented communication is examined to determine if the segment is valid. Valid segments are stored, while invalid segments are discarded. Next, it is computed when the invalid segments will be retransmitted. A subsequent transmission of the communication is received and a retransmission of a previously identified invalid segment is extracted, the retransmitted segment being located based on the computation. The retransmitted segment is examined to determine if it is valid.

    摘要: A method and apparatus for measuring a channel quality in wireless transmit/receive units (WTRUs) which are equipped with a subscriber based smart antenna. The WTRUs are equipped with a smart antenna so that the WTRU generates a plurality of directional beams and, optionally, an omni-directional beam. A dwell time is provided in a measurement period to switch a beam from an active beam to a non-active beam. The active beam is one of the plurality of directional beams or, optionally, the omni-directional beam, for communication with one or more serving base station(s). A beam is switched to a non-active beam at the initiation of the dwell time. Signals are received through the switched non-active beam, and samples of the received signals are generated. The samples are stored in a memory. Channel quality is measured using the samples, whereby the dwell time to measure the channel quality is minimized.

In a wireless communication system that supports both a basic low speed channel and a special high speed channel, when a call is received from a user, it is determined whether the high speed channel is suitable for the call and preferable for the user. If so, it is determined whether the high speed channel is available. If so, the call is admitted and assigned to the high speed channel. If these criteria are not met, the call is admitted and assigned a low speed channel if an available low speed channel can support the call; otherwise the call request is rejected. After admitting the call, it is continuously determined whether the high speed channel or the low speed channel is best, and the channel type is switched accordingly.
