The Energy spectral density of OFDM signals inherently rolls off slowly. Slow OFDM spectral rolloff has system level implications traditionally mitigated by some combination of the following: addition of bandlimiting filtering; use of significant guard bands of zeroed tones; and, guard time shaping. Each of these techniques negatively impact system performance and/or flexibility. This application presents a methodology for active cancellation of out of band spectral energy. The technique can be used by itself or in conjunction with above traditional methods to help control out of band emission. Examples of the use of the new technique are provided. Computational cost of the new technique is also discussed.

A system in accordance with the present invention comprises a plurality of amplifiers, each amplifier in the plurality of amplifiers receiving the signals, a Frequency Translation Module, comprising a plurality of analog-to-digital converters, wherein each amplifier in the plurality of amplifiers is coupled to a separate analog-to-digital converter in the plurality of analog-to-digital converters, wherein the plurality of analog-to-digital converters convert the signals into digital data streams, a digital signal processing section, coupled to the plurality of analog-to-digital converters, wherein the digital signal processing section at least translates the frequency of the digital data streams and filters the digital data streams, a digital-to-analog section, coupled to the digital signal processing section; wherein the digital-to-analog section downconverts the satellite signals to an intermediate frequency band, and a receiver, coupled to the digital-to-analog section, wherein the receiver receives an output of the digital-to-analog section of the module at the intermediate frequency band, the output of the digital to analog section being on a single coaxial cable.

A dynamic method for optimizing interference levels between multiple downlink beams transmitted from a satellite with a common frequency spectrum causes the power level of at least one of the interfering beams to be adjusted so as to produce desired interference levels within the beams' respective ground target areas. The beam power adjustments are preferably accomplished by varying the drive levels of the high power amplifiers on board the satellite, at least one of which is initially operated at less than its maximum rated power level. Single or multiple beam powers can be adjusted, either up, down or some up and some down. Power level adjustments are normally made in response to actual beam power profiles not matching design standards, to changing service priorities among the different beam target areas, and to changing signal power requirements for the different beams.

The number of high power amplifiers required for multi-channel satellite communications is reduced by a high power amplification of selected sets of signals in respective common amplifiers, with each set of combined signals consisting of channels whose frequency bands are mutually discrete and sufficiently separated in frequency that their third order intermodulation products do not substantially overlap in frequency with any of the channels in the same set. The signals can be separated out again after amplification and transmitted as downlink signals, either individually from a dedicated downlink antenna or in combination with other channels in a common downlink antenna.
