摘要： Intelligently downloading content to user devices is described herein. According to an embodiment, a user request for content is received. In response to the request, a low quality version of the content is downloaded and played to the user. Then, a higher quality version of the content is downloaded (this may occur during or after the download or playback of the low quality version of the content). Playback of the low quality version is discontinued. Then, playback of the higher quality version begins at the point where playback of the low quality version was discontinued. In some embodiments, the low quality version and the higher quality version of the requested content (among all the versions of the requested content) are identified via crowdsourcing.

A first recorded portion of the media content stream is retrieved. The first recorded portion has a start point corresponding to the first timestamp and an end point corresponding to the second timestamp.

摘要： Methods and systems for improved quality of a streaming session using multiple simultaneous streams. For the multiple simultaneous streams an audio/video device (A/V device) records and generates a high-resolution stream and a low-resolution stream for simultaneous transmission to a server. The server selects one of the two streams for retransmission to a destination client device. The server also monitors the streaming session and estimates a total available bandwidth between the server and the A/V device and assigns a confidence value to the bandwidth estimation. The server periodically transmits the bandwidth estimate and confidence value to the A/V device to improve the efficiency of the streams being generated by the A/V device. The A/V device can use the received bandwidth estimate and confidence value to adapt the resolution of each of the streams to efficiently use the total available bandwidth between the A/V device and the server.

The video streaming client is configured to select to stream the target version of the desired video content even though the data communication speed is sufficient to stream a version of the desired video content without playback interruption when encoded using a value of the encoding attribute which is higher than the target value.

The converter device may measure the time offset between the video streams of the transmission sources and buffer one of the video streams to align the timing of the video streams, so the user does not detect a timing delay while viewing the video content.

A determination is made as to whether a bandwidth currently available in the household is sufficient for enabling access to the first media asset. A third media asset is identified having a remaining duration that is more than a remaining duration of the second media asset. A message is displayed that indicates the bandwidth currently available in the household is insufficient to access the first media asset and that has an option to access the third media asset instead of the first media asset.

摘要： Embodiments are related to faster provisioning of targeted advertisements at a set-top box (STB) via an Internet Protocol (IP) connection between the STB and a remote server. The disclosed IP-based advertisement distribution system enables targeted advertisements to be pulled from the remote server efficiently, causing the advertisements to be made available within a short time frame (e.g., less than one day from the time when the advertisements are available). The disclosed methods enables a STB to determine whether to retain existing targeted advertisements, discard them, or provision newly-available advertisements. The targeted advertisements can depend on various factors such as demographic information of an owner of the STB, lifestyle information of the owner of the STB, etc.
