摘要:
A pair of polarizing plates are disposed on two sides of a TN-type liquid crystal cell constituted by a liquid crystal twist-aligned at a twist angle of 80.degree. to 120.degree.. A retardation plate is disposed between one of the polarizing plates and the liquid crystal cell in such a manner that the optical axis of the retardation plate crosses the transmission axis of the adjacent polarizing plate at 45.degree.. The pair of polarizing plates are arranged such that their transmission axes are parallel to each other. The liquid crystal cell is arranged such that the optical axis of the retardation plate crosses the aligning direction of the liquid crystal molecules on the substrate side adjacent to the retardation plate at 45.degree.. A liquid crystal driving circuit is connected to the liquid crystal. This circuit serves to change the voltage applied to the liquid crystal to change the polarized state of light transmitted through the liquid crystal so as to change the color of emerging light.

A liquid crystal display apparatus includes a first polarizing plate, a liquid crystal display cell, a second polarizing plate, a switching cell, a first reflective polarizing plate, and a surface light source, which are arranged in this order. The apparatus further includes a control driving unit to switch the switching cell between a first and second state. In the first state, plane of polarization of polarized light emitted by the surface light source and transmitted through the first reflective polarizing plate and the switching cell is coincident with a transmissive axis of the second polarizing plate. In the second state, a plane of polarization of the polarized light input to the liquid crystal display cell from the side of the first polarizing plate and transmitted through the second polarizing plate and the switching cell is coincident with a reflective axis of the first reflective polarizing plate.

A method of manufacturing a liquid crystal display apparatus includes forming at least one assembly for forming a plurality of finished liquid crystal display apparatuses, by opposing two glass substrates to have a space therebetween and sealing a periphery of the space between the two glass substrates by an outer peripheral seal member. Outer surfaces of the two glass substrates are etched by soaking the assembly in an etching solution within an etching bath while maintaining a temperature and a concentration of the etching solution within the etching bath at a substantially constant temperature and at a substantially constant concentration. The etched outer surfaces of the glass substrates are flattened by polishing the outer surfaces of the glass substrates.

A method of manufacturing a liquid crystal display device includes forming an assembly by sealing a gap between outer circumferential regions of two glass substrates, which are positioned to face each other, with an outer circumferential sealing member. The assembly is dipped in an etching solution contained in an etching vessel, thereby etching the two glass substrates of the assembly for a time corresponding to a predetermind etching thickness of each of the two glass substrates, so as to decrease the thickness of each of the two glass substrates, while the temperature and the concentration of the etching solution contained in the etching vessel are maintained constant.

A liquid crystal display device has a pair of substrates disposed at an observer side and at the opposite side to the observer side, a plurality of pixel electrodes and an opposing electrode which are formed on the internal surfaces of the pair of substrates, a reflective layer, and liquid crystal sealed between these substrates. Each pixel electrode has a reflective display region corresponding to the reflective layer for reflecting light that enters from the observer side to the observer side, and a transmissive display region for allowing light that enters from the opposite side to pass therethrough to the observer side. A liquid crystal layer thickness adjusting layer is formed on the internal surface of the substrate at the observer side, for setting the liquid crystal layer thickness in the reflective display region to be smaller than the liquid crystal layer thickness in the transmissive display region.

A liquid crystal display device includes a homeotropic alignment liquid crystal panel having observation-side and opposite-side substrates which oppose each other, a plurality of electrodes which are arranged on sides of opposing inner surfaces of the substrates and form a plurality of pixels by opposing regions, and a liquid crystal layer which is arranged between the substrates and made of a liquid crystal material with negative dielectric anisotropy in which liquid crystal molecules are aligned substantially vertically with respect to the inner surfaces of the substrates. A pair of polarizing plates are respectively arranged on both sides of the homeotropic alignment liquid crystal panel. A pair of λ/4 retardation plates are respectively arranged between the homeotropic alignment liquid crystal panel and the pair of polarizing plates.

A liquid crystal display device includes a pair of substrates, electrodes formed on the opposing surfaces of the pair of substrates, and a liquid crystal layer twisted in the gap between the pair of substrates at a predetermined twisted angle. A normal polarizing plate to exhibit a polarizing function for the whole visible light is arranged on the outer surface of an observation side substrate in the pair of substrates. A color polarizing plate to exhibit a polarizing function for visible light of a wavelength band other than a specific wavelength band is arranged on the outer surface of the opposite side substrate in the pair of substrates. A reflecting plate to reflect light entering from the observation side toward the observation side is arranged on a surface of the color polarizing plate that is opposite to the surface that opposes the opposite side substrate.

In front of a liquid crystal display element, a surface light source is arranged which emits a light toward the liquid crystal display element and lets lights coming from its front and its back permeate therethrough. The liquid crystal display element has reflection/permeation means which is provided behind a liquid crystal cell and a liquid crystal layer, and which reflects a part of a light that comes to each of a plurality of pixels from the front of the liquid crystal cell, and lets the other part of the light permeate the reflection/permeation means.
