A directionally solidified multivariant eutectic .gamma.-.gamma.' nickel-base superalloy casting having improved high temperature properties is provided comprising a two-phase eutectic structure consisting essentially of, on a weight percent bases, 6.0 to 9.0 aluminum, 5.0 to 17.0 tantalum, 0-10 cobalt, 0-6 vanadium, 0-6 rhenium, 2.0-6.0 tungsten, and the balance being nickel, subject to the proviso that the sum of the atomic percentages of aluminum plus tantalum is within the range of from 19-22, and the ratio of atomic percentages of tantalum to aluminum plus tantalum is within the range of from 0.12 to 0.23. Embedded within the .gamma. nickel-base matrix are aligned eutectic .gamma.' phase (primarily nickel-aluminum-tantalum) reinforcing fibers.

A braze material is provided for repairing an article, and particularly components formed from cobalt and nickel-base superalloys, such as gas turbine engine components. The braze material is composed of high melt particles distributed within a braze alloy. The braze alloy can be any suitable bonding material of the type used to repair components that must operate at high temperatures. The particles are single crystal, directionally solidified or equiaxed particles formed from a superalloy or ceramic material, or mixtures thereof. Importantly, the particles have an aspect ratio (length to width) of at least 4:1. The braze material can be provided and used in the form of a slurry, a presintered preform, a plasticized tape, or in a powdered form.

A ring is formed having alternating segments of ferromagnetic and paramagnetic materials. The ring is formed by first providing an annular ring of a high strength magnetic steel. Teeth are formed on the outer surface of the ring by forming troughs of the ferromagnetic material. Low pressure plasma deposition is used to fill in the troughs with a high strength paramagnetic material. The excess steel and excess plasma deposited material is removed to leave the finished ring of alternating segments of ferromagnetic and paramagnetic material.
