The present invention relates to dynamic Client configuration and more particularly to a system and a method for automatically configuring a Client to access each desired SNA Application through an appropriate Server. A configuration feature (also called Automatic Server Configuration option) in a Client automatically retrieves a configuration code (also called Autoserver code, in order to configure the Client to access desired SNA Applications through appropriate Servers. A CGI (Common Gateway Interface, program on an Autoserver URL (Universal Resource Locator) system dynamically creates an Autoserver code (also called TN client configuration code). The Autoserver code is used by the Client to associate to each desired SNA Application an appropriate Server. The automatic configuration of the Client allows the user to directly access an SNA Application without having first to connect to an Intermediate Selection Application and Selection Screen.

A method and system for establishing a Systems Network Architecture (SNA) session between SNA resources through a packet/cell switching network. The packet/cell switching network includes an origin access node that provides client access services, and at least one destination access node that provides server access services. In accordance with the method of the present invention a SNA session request is received from a source SNA resource for establishing an SNA session with a target SNA resource. An undirected message is broadcast over the packet/cell switching network to identify the destination access nodes that support the source SNA resource and that provide server access services. One or more positive replies are received from respectively one or more of the destination access nodes that support the source SNA resource and that provide server access services. As part of the receiving step, information relating to a traffic handling capacity of the destination access node and information related to establishment of a connection between the origin access node and the destination access node is retrieved. Finally, a destination access node is selected in accordance with the information describing the destination node and in accordance with the information related to establishment of a connection between the origin access node and the destination node.

More particularly, a method and system for dynamically providing a Systems Network Architecture (SNA) Logical Unit (LU) definition for the establishment of a SNA session between a SNA client and a SNA application. The method of the present invention includes receiving a SNA session request from a telnet 3270 client, and in response thereto, retrieving a definition of a SNA LU from a table shared by one or more telnet 3270 servers. A local table within the telnet 3270 server is dynamically updating with the retrieved SNA LU definition.

A method and system for setting a value within a type of service field in an Internet Protocol (IP) datagram in accordance with an application level protocol at which said IP datagram is transported within a socks connection from a source application that resides within a source device to a destination application that resides within a destination device. The method includes determining IP addresses of the source and destination devices. The application level protocol for the source and destination devices are then determined utilizing the port addresses to which and from which the IP datagram is sent. The IP addresses for the source and destination nodes as well as the identity of the application level protocols corresponding to the source and destination applications are then indexed in a first table. A type of service value to be encoded within the IP datagram is then determined and written into the type of service field of the IP datagram.

The method comprises the steps of measuring using measurement probes from one or a plurality of measurement systems distributed in the IP network, performance and availability of each server for accessing one or a plurality of SNA applications; transferring in a single system within the IP network said performance and response time measurements; selecting in said single system an appropriate server for accessing a particular SNA application using said performance and availability measurements.
