摘要: A cryogenic freezer having a thermally insulated tunnel-like enclosure with an entrance and an exit and means for conveying products being frozen therethrough. Products are contacted with liquid cryogen at a region generally near the entrance and a blower located closer to the entrance than to the exit controls flow of cryogen vapor. Upstream and downstream baffles and dampers associated with blower are linked together for complementary movement to selectively regulate the upstream and downstream flow of vapor discharged from the blower. Additional blowers circulate the cold cryogenic vapor transverse to the direction of the conveying means. The temperature of vapor leaving the region of the entrance is monitored the orientation of the baffle and damper arrangement is adjusted in accordance with the temperature monitored. The food products can be contacted by liquid nitrogen in a reservoir facilitates cleaning and retards inefficient vaporization.

摘要: An endless conveyor carries articles being cooled through a freezing tunnel. Spray nozzles at longitudinally spaced locations along the tunnel expand high pressure liquid nitrogen to substantially atmospheric pressure to create a central flow of cold fluid in association with a surrounding inducer. The nozzles are arranged in an array with a first group being directed downward and toward the entrance and with a second group being directed downward and toward the exit end. A fan disposed in the intermediate region between the two groups creates an upward flow of cryogen vapor into the region that maintains a head of higher pressure vapor at the entrance to each of the inducers. Downwardly directed blowers are located between the array and both the entrance and exit ends in order to assure there is efficient extraction of heat from articles being carried along the conveyor from end to end. The inducers create an efficient circulation of vapor in the enclosure, and the rate of flow of cryogen being expanded is regulated by using nozzles having changeable orifice areas.

摘要: A system for CO.sub.2 cooling of the cargo compartment of a refrigerated vehicle. A vessel carried by the vehicle holds liquid CO.sub.2 at pressure preferably not greater than about 125 psia. Liquid CO.sub.2 is supplied to first heat-exchanger where it is vaporized and warmed a predetermined amount while the pressure is maintained at at least about 80 psia. The pressure of the warmed CO.sub.2 is lowered to about atmospheric pressure without the creation of solid CO.sub.2, while simultaneously cooling the CO.sub.2 vapor, using a gas-driven motor through which the CO.sub.2 vapor is passed. The cooled CO.sub.2 vapor from the motor is passed through a second heat-exchanger, and a fan connected to the motor circulates the atmosphere in the cargo compartment in association with both heat-exchangers. The CO.sub.2 vapor from the second heat-exchanger is vented to the atmosphere exterior of cargo compartment. Isenthalpic expansion means may be used in series with the gas motor, or a second gas motor may be used which can drive a generator to create electric power that is stored in a battery.

摘要: A method of controlling a CO.sub.2 snow-making operation which is promptly self-correcting should an upset occur that results in incomplete separation of CO.sub.2 snow from the cold CO.sub.2 vapor. The separated snow is fed to a generally closed chamber, while a major portion of the cold CO.sub.2 vapor is passed in heat-exchange relationship with warmer liquid CO.sub.2 flowing toward the expansion nozzle. The temperature and/or pressure of the CO.sub.2 vapor exiting the heat-exchanger is monitored, and upon detecting a condition indicative of incomplete separation of snow from vapor, the flow of vapor through the heat-exchanger is temporarily reduced while flow of a minor portion of CO.sub.2 vapor is permitted to exit from the generally closed chamber. Prompt correction of the situation causing the incomplete separation automatically results.

摘要: Filling units for supplying small tanks or the like with gasoline, kerosene, or other flowable materials which attach to an inlet to such a tank. When the filling unit is in a fill position, a displacer section occupies a substantial volume within the tank and allows the person filling the tank to supply the liquid until the tank will accept no more and the liquid reaches a predetermined level in a funnel portion of the filler. Thereafter, manipulation of the displacer section, as for example by withdrawing a section of the overall unit upward opening a valve or movement within the tank itself, causes all the liquid remaining in the funnel up to such predetermined level to be accommodated within the tank by occupying the volume previously occupied by the displacer section and thereby completing the filling of the tank to a full condition without any spillage. The overall unit may be such that it is intended to be removed from the tank after each filling operation (and preferably stored in an optional, integral storage compartment), or it may be designed to fit permanently within a tank inlet and to be movable downward to a storage orientation, which allows the replacing of the protective screw cap that normally closes the tank.

摘要: A chiller has an insulated enclosure for maintaining the low ambient temperatures therewithin. A conveyor belt carries food products throughout the enclosure, passing through an entrance and an exit in the enclosure. The conveyor belt includes a straight-line path section and a helical path section, and is driven by a suitable drive, such as an internal rotating drum or an endless drive belt contacting a bottom tier of the conveyor helical path section. The belt includes inner and outer links interconnected by transverse rods. Upon entering a helical path section from a straight-line path section, the conveyor belt undergoes expansion only, with the inner ends of the rods undergoing only slight relative angular movement, while the outer ends of the rods are permitted an amount of relative longitudinal movement so as to allow the conveyor belt to assume a curved configuration having the desired radius of curvature for the helical path.

摘要: A cabinet freezer efficiently utilizes a liquid cryogen refrigerant in conjunction with a spiral conveyor which conveys a product load through a temperature gradient within the freezer. The freezer has a lower inlet and an upper outlet for the conveyor and food load thereon. The escape of cryogen vapors created in the freezer from the liquid cryogen is controlled such that at least about 80% of the vapors exit through the upper outlet which is at the warmest zone established as a part of the temperature gradient in the freezer.

摘要: A cabinet cooler or freezer which efficiently utilizes cryogenic refrigeration either with or without mechanical refrigeration. The freezer intermittently freezes relatively large batches of food by efficiently utilizing the natural expansion effect of a liquid cryogen, in combination with mechanical circulation by blowers, to create an overall circulation that efficiently removes heat from the food. A secondary circulation effect is induced, in a manner similar to the operation of a jet pump, which amplifies the circulation and allows CO.sub.2 to be employed as the cryogen with modulating valve control to achieve uniformly low temperature throughout the cabinet without snow build-up on the cabinet bottom. Some cabinet versions create a cyclonic circulation pattern about a vertical axis that is particularly effective.

摘要: A CO.sub.2 food freezer has an elongated enclosure through which material to be cooled is carried on an endless porous belt conveyor with an upper operating belt run vertically spaced from the lower return run to provide an intermediate region therebetween. Liquid CO.sub.2 injection means is located in an upper region to direct CO.sub.2 snow plus cold CO.sub.2 vapor downward onto material being conveyed. Blowers aimed at an angle of between about 5.degree. and about 35.degree. upward from the horizontal are located in the intermediate region, and fans in the upper region direct CO.sub.2 vapor downward onto material on the belt. The belt includes a plurality of longitudinally spaced transverse rods and a plurality of wire sections that respectively interconnect adjacent rods in pairs. The wire sections are bent so that all segments of wire extending generally between said rods lie in substantially the same plane which constitutes the upper surface of the upper run. The rods effectively deflect cold CO.sub.2 vapor from the blowers upward against the undersurface of material being carried along the belt and assure efficient freezing is accomplished.
