Abstract: A slider of a magnetic recording head comprises a plurality of electrical bond pads coupled to bias sources. A first writer on the slider is coupled between first and second bond pads. A second writer on the slider is coupled between third and fourth bond pads. At least one heater is coupled between two of the first, second, third, and fourth bond pads. The first writer can have a center-tap coupled to first and second bond pads. The second writer can have a center-tap coupled to third and fourth bond pads. A first writer heater can be coupled between the center-tap of the second writer and the ground pad. A second writer heater can be coupled between the center-tap of the first writer and the ground pad.

A sensor is coupled to the pair of the electrical bond pads in parallel with the component. The sensor is configured to sense for one or more of thermal asperities of a magnetic recording medium, voids of the medium, spacing changes between the slider and the medium, and contact between the slider and the medium. The sensor is configured to be rendered non-functional in response to the sensor receiving a predetermined signal. The component is configured to remain operable after the sensor is rendered non-functional.

Abstract: A head slider for use in a disk drive is movably positionable relative to a magnetic recording disk and includes at least one write element for writing data to the magnetic recording disk. The write element includes a writer coil electrically connected between a first bond pad and a second bond pad, where the connection between the first bond pad and the second bond pad includes a center tap located proximate to a voltage null point. The head slider also includes at least one read element for reading data from the magnetic recording disk, the read element electrically connected between the center tap and a third bond pad, where the write element and the read element are configured to be selectively activated based on biased inputs to the first bond pad, the second bond pad, and the third bond pad.
