A guiding method and apparatus are presented for preventing the generation of lateral curving in a rolled slab produced in a roughing mill train, consisting of an edging mill and a horizontal mill in tandem, for example. The apparatus basically includes a first side guide placed upstream at the entrance to the edging mill, a second side guide placed downstream at the exit of the horizontal mill and a third side guide placed between the edging mill and the horizontal mill. The first side guide at the entrance to the edging mill synchronously closes the separation distance of the guide components upon the entry of the rolled slab into the first side guide, leaving a narrow space between the guide and the rolled slab. The third side guide closes the separation spacing based on slab exit timing representing the instant the tail end of the rolled slab passes through the edging mill. The second side guide assumes a narrow separation distance when the head end of the rolled slab enters therebetween. The restraining force provided by the narrow separation distance prevents lateral shifting to occur during the rolling process thereby reducing snaking of the rolled slab.

Herein disclosed is an endless hot rolling method using a hot strip mill substantially composed of a roughing mill and a finishing mill having a roll bender and a roll shifter to continuously roll sequentially joined different rolling materials. The method comprises the steps of: calculating a roll shift range in an axial direction for each rolling material so as to provide a desired crown; determining a rolling sequence so as to obtain a common roll shift range for each pair of neighboring rolling materials; connecting a preceding material at the tail end thereof to the head end of the succeeding material, between the roughing mill and the finishing mill; shifting the rolls during transition from the preceding material to the succeeding material so that the roll position corresponding to the joint of the two materials is within a common roll shift range for the materials; and changing the roll bending load in accordance with the roll shift pattern so as to achieve the desired crown of each material. If the width of a common roll shift range for all the materials is at least 50% of the width of the individual roll shift ranges, rolling can be continuously performed without shifting in an axial direction rolls.

The sheet profile of a strip on the outlet side of a final stand coincides with a desired value without deforming the shape of the strip, by using a hot strip finish rolling mill having a number of rolling stands disposed sequentially. The rolling mill employs feedback control of upstream stands to reduce the error between a sheet profile measured by a sheet profile meter disposed at the outlet side of a selected stand and a desired sheet profile. The selected stand is the stand where the sheet thickness of the strip is at the percentage sheet crown critical sheet thickness. The sheet profile measured by the sheet profile meter is used to control the downstream stands using feed-forward control to make the sheet profile on the outlet side of the final stand coincide with the desired sheet profile.

A press apparatus for reducing widths of hot slabs comprises a pair of anvils movable toward and away from each other in width directions of the hot slabs, width reduction heads to which the pair of anvils are attached, respectively, and eccentric presses for reciprocatively driving the width reduction heads through sliders, respectively. The apparatus further comprises width adjusting means incorporated in the eccentric presses, respectively, for changing distances between the width reduction heads and the sliders. Each of the anvils has a parallel portion in parallel to a feeding direction of the hot slabs and an inclined portion on an entry side in the feeding direction. With this arrangement, the reducing distance can be set according to the desired distance of reduction in width in continuous width reduction and the reduction in width can be continuously effected with the set reducing distance with high efficiency. The press apparatus preferably further comprises buckling preventing means such as rollers controlled by hydraulic cylinders for urging at least two locations of the slab along a central longitudinal line of the slab and on upstream and downstream sides of a line connecting junctions of the parallel portions and the inclined portions of the anvils, thereby preventing any buckling of the slab occurring in reduction in width of the slab.

A take-up equipment and a take-up method for a finish rolling mill for dividing a strip into a plurality of coiled products when taking up the strip on the exit side of the finish rolling mill are provided. A plurality of take-up machines (24, 26, K1, K2) are disposed at the downstream side of a hot finish rolling mill; a shearing machine (27, 2) is provided on the upstream side of a pinch roll (23, 4) of the take-up machines (24, K1) at the uppermost stream end; and a strip passing device (28, 6a) is provided between the shearing machine and the pinch roll at the uppermost stream to prevent a strip from rising. The strip passing devices are guiding devices for restricting the height of the rise of the strip or the airflow suction type strip passing devices for drawing in a strip under suction using airflow. The plurality of take-up machines are down coilers or carousel type reels having two winding drums (66a, 66b).
