The improvement broadly includes: at least one body passageway (32) communicating the source with the body bearing surface, the intersection of each body passageway with the body bearing surface defining a body port (33); a head passageway (36) communicating the head bearing surface with the spindle, the intersection of said head passageway with said head bearing surface defining at least one head port (42); and the body and head passageways being so configured and arranged such that lubricant may flow from the source to the spindle only when the head is in the vicinity of the index position such that the body and head ports overlap one another.

A turret for a machine tool is provided with: a turret body; a swiveling drum on which a tool holder for holding the rotating tool is mountable; a swiveling and indexing drive portion for swiveling the swiveling drum with a swiveling and indexing motor and for indexing any desired rotating tool; and a rotational driving motor, having a rotating shaft directed to an index position, incorporated into the swiveling drum and supported to the turret body. Under the condition that the rotating tool is indexed, a holder shaft of the tool holder of the rotating tool and the rotating shaft are coupled directly with each other and thereby the rotating tool is rotated by the rotational driving motor. Thus, when the rotating tool is drivingly rotated, the power transmission efficiency for rotational drive is high to thereby make it possible to reduce the heat generation, vibration and noise.

An indexing tool turret assembly is disclosed including a rotatable indexable turret tooling plate having mounted thereon stationary as well as live tooling. A single drive motor is utilized in order to perform indexing as well as to drive the live tooling. A plurality of live tools can be simultaneously mounted on the turret tooling plate and the single drive motor is selectively engageable with each of the live tools so that only one of the plurality of live tools is driven at a given time. The selective live tool drive train includes an axially movable drive shaft and bevel drive gear for selectively engaging the driven bevel gear of the desired live tool. The axially movable shaft assembly includes a mechanism for adjusting the backlash between the driving and driven bevel gears when these gears are engaged with one another. The turret assembly further includes a clutch for selectively engaging the single drive motor to index the turret tooling plate and a torque limiter provided in the indexing drive train to disengage the indexing drive in the event of a torque overload occurring during indexing.

A turret machine tool has a slide table mounted on a machine base for movement toward and away from a workpiece to be machined. A turret head is indexably mounted on the slide table, and a plurality of multispindle heads mounted on the turret head at spaced angular intervals in an indexing direction of the turret head, each of the multispindle heads having a plurality of spindles disposed therein. A plurality of machine tools mounted on respective ends of the spindles, and a plurality of spindle gears are mounted on the spindles, respectively. A driven gear is mounted in each of the multispindle heads in mesh with the spindle gears through a train of gears. A drive gear is axially movably disposed in the turret head for movement into and out of mesh with the driven gear in one of the multispindle heads which has been indexed. A plurality of gear shafts are supported in a cantilevered fashion by each of the multispindle heads and project toward the turret head, the train of gears and the driven gear being mounted on the gear shafts. The multispindle heads can be highly accurately installed on the turret head, and the train of gears can easily be serviced. The turret machine tool is relatively light in weight, and can be manufactured relatively inexpensively.

A rotary center of said turret head is horizontally directed so as to have an intersectional angle of 45 degrees with respect to each of said two main shafts. The invention provides automatic positioning of a tool carrier in a turret for machine tools. The turret comprises a support mounted on a base for rotation and against axial displacement and a tool carrier mounted on the support for rotation therewith. The tool carrier has a guide in alignment with an annular track on the base. A pair of coaxial rings of teeth on the base and the tool carrier are arranged for meshing engagement to locate the tool carrier on the base in a working position, and a bolt is glidably mounted in the guide and is displaceable along the track upon rotation of the tool carrier. The track has a plurality of recesseseach adapted to receive a projecting end of the bolt for locking the tool carrier in position. The projecting bolt end and the recesses have corresponding inclined camming surfaces for moving the bolt end out of the recesses upon rotation of the tool carrier, and the support has a like plurality of recesses each adapted to receive the opposite projecting end of the bolt when the first-mentioned projecting end is axially displaced out of the first-mentioned recesses upon rotation of the tool carrier.

This disclosure relates to a turret lathe having full production capabilities. A turret carrying a plurality of drivable end working tools is selectively indexable and a single drive means is arranged to be coupled to and uncoupled from each drivable tool when indexed to an operative position. The spindle is arranged to be driven at turning speeds for operation with turning tools, and also at feed speeds in conjunction with the end working tools so that irregular contours, slots, indentions, etc. may be machined in the end face and also the peripheries of a workpiece. The end working tools may also perform drilling, boring and tapping operations on the workpiece as it is indexed to position.
