摘要:
A solenoid for actuating a print wire normally biased against the impact direction by novel spiral spring means. Energization of the solenoid coil rapidly moves the print wire in the impact direction against the bias of the spring. Release of the energy supplied to the solenoid coil causes very rapid return of the print wire to the non-printing (i.e., quiescent) position. The novel spiral spring structure experiences a substantially linear spring force upon deflection and provides significantly increased deflection as compared with conventional structures to allow for substantially rapid initial acceleration of the print wire in the impact direction while providing for rapid return of the print wire to the quiescent condition. The mounting of said spring reduces bouncing on overshooting.

A high-speed printer of the dot matrix type in which incoming information to be printed, presented in either serial or parallel form, is examined for invalid bits and loaded into a buffer in parallel fashion. Printing does not begin until the buffer is loaded to print a line of the desired length. Printing begins as soon as the first character loaded into the buffer reaches the output stage at which time the actuation of the print wires of the dot matrix are moved across the paper document at a substantially constant speed. Detection of the location of the carriage assembly moving the printer head assembly is performed independent of the movement of the carriage to actuate the print wires at the appropriate locations. Logical circuitry is provided for detecting the presence of invalid characters and the buffer and serial-to-parallel converter are cleared prior to the loading of the next group of characters to be printed on the next line of print. During serial transmission, the printer assembly generates Acknowledge signals to indicate to the transmitting facility that the previous character has been received and stored.

Disclosed is a printing solenoid specifically adapted and improved for the printing of Braille dots and in particular interpoint Braille. A plunger and printing shaft are fixably mounted together and the combination mounted for slidable movement in a rear end cap and in a molded insert bearing between energized and deenergized positions. The plunger/printing shaft combination are located within a bobbin having an electric coil wound thereon. A tubular case encloses the coil and mounts a front bushing which in turn mounts the molded insert bearing. A rear flux washer is held in place between the bobbin by the rear end cap which is retained within the rear portion of the tubular case. During energization, the plunger and printing shaft combination move such that the shaft strikes a piece of paper to be imprinted with a Braille dot. Depending upon whether the dot is to extend away from the solenoid or towards the solenoid, an embossing ball or an embossing recess is used on the end of the printing shaft. An internal return spring moves the plunger/printing shaft combination back to its deenergized position. A high degree of printing accuracy is achieved by slidably mounting the plunger/printing shaft combination in bearings which are separate from the bobbin coil assembly. The end cap is responsive to a torque applying device, and through the rear flux washer and the bobbin, torque can be applied to the bushing to aid in inserting or removing the solenoid from a dense solenoid array.

A solenoid-type magnet drive, including a coil surrounding in parts an axially movable armature, and a housing for mounting the coil, further includes an attenuating device which comprises an attenuating disk positioned abutting centrally one end of the armature, when in a retracted position; two resilient rings hold the disk near its periphery and without play for preventing rebounding.

A high speed axial-type printing solenoid includes a rebound and energy absorbing arrangement which employs a block of energy-absorbing "dead" elastomeric material held in a partially compressed state by an impact plate. The impact plate is mounted to engage and position the plunger or armature at a rest position and to transmit impact forces to the partially compressed block of elastomeric material.

The hammer of a serial impact printer comprises a solenoid including a stationary magnetic structure with an opening extending therethrough and a movable magnetic structure adapted to move through the opening. The movable magnetic structure is accelerated by the flux path from the stationary magnetic structure and through the movable magnetic structure as the gap between the movable and stationary magnetic structures closes such that the movable magnetic structure is in substantially unobstructed free flight before the impact area coupled to the movable magnetic structure strikes the character element. The character element in turn strikes a print receiving medium supported by a platen, typically through an ink-bearing ribbon.

A spring-less linear actuator, especially useful as a print wire drive. A permanent magnet armature is driven from a rest position on a pole piece by magnetic repulsion upon energization of a solenoid by a D.C. pulse. The armature is fixed to a print wire which rebounds from a printing medium, thereby returning the permanent magnet toward the rest position, where it is held, without bouncing, by the magnetic attraction between the armature and the pole piece of the solenoid, which is now de-energized.

A dot matrix printer including a dot matrix print head assembly including a plurality of thin, elongated print wires having printing end surfaces, and a bearing member for supporting the print wires adjacent their printing end surfaces. The bearing member has a plurality of bearing apertures, with the printing wire end surfaces extendable therethrough to print on a document. The apertures have their centers aligned along parallel axes defining leading and trailing sets of print wires, the center of each of the apertures aligned with one axis being located parallel to a point between two adjacent ones of the apertures aligned with the other axis. The control means causes selected ones of the leading set of print wires to print at a particular column position, and thereafter causes selected ones of the trailing set of print wires to print at the same column position.

A printing device includes a wire printing head provided with a plurality of closely adjacent printing wires movable back and forth with respect to a web of printing paper with inking ribbon interposed therebetween. The device further includes a pair of spools for taking up the inking ribbon and a carriage for supporting thereon these spools and the printing head in an associated relationship. The carriage may be moved along a print line in a first direction by first drive means, and in a second direction opposite to the first direction by second drive means. Means is provided to rotatively drive said spools on the carriage in response to the movement of the carriage imparted by the first drive means. The shift of the carriage from the first direction to the second direction may be provided by an automatic reversing mechanism. The rotation of the spools on the carriage may be stopped by stop means when the carriage is being moved by the second drive means.
