    摘要: A torque transfer mechanism is provided for controlling the magnitude of a clutch engagement force exerted on a multi-plate clutch assembly that is operably disposed between a first rotary and a second rotary member. The torque transfer mechanism includes an actuator having a first segment fixed for rotation with the first rotary member and a second segment having a screw thread formed thereon which is rotatably and slidably disposed within a chamber filled with magnetorheological fluid. An electromagnetic coil is disposed in proximity to the chamber and is selectively energized for varying the viscosity of the magnetorheological fluid so as to induce axial movement of the actuator for engaging the multi-plate clutch assembly.

    摘要: A multiple disc clutch pack includes a pilot magneto-rheological operator which controls operation of an associated ball ramp operator which, in turn, compresses a clutch pack to selectively transfer torque between and input member and an output member. The pilot operator includes an electromagnetic coil disposed proximate a magneto-rheological fluid contained within a chamber of a pilot clutch. Activation of the electromagnetic coil creates a magnetic flux which travels through the magneto-rheological fluid and couples the fluid clutch members, creating drag and relative rotation between members of the ball ramp operator. Such relative rotation of the ball ramp operator selectively compresses the clutch pack and transfer torque from the input member to the output member.

    摘要: This invention relates to a magnetic tensioning device comprising a rotatable outer housing and a magnetic assembly positioned in the interior of the outer housing. A space is provided between the outer housing and the magnetic assembly. A plurality of magnetic particles are positioned in the space between the magnetic assembly and the outer housing. The magnetic particles are held in place by the magnetic flux from the magnetic assembly and the magnetic particles magnetically couple the magnetic assembly and the outer housing. Means for varying the size of the space between the magnetic assembly and the outer housing is provided. The varying of the size of the space varies the magnetic flux from the magnetic assembly and changes the magnetic coupling between the magnetic assembly and the outer housing.

    摘要: Systems and methods relating to a clutch system for use in controllably transmitting torque from an input shaft to an output shaft. The clutch system has a torque transmission fluid that has a viscosity that changes based on the strength of an electromagnetic field passing through the fluid. A number of sensors are placed at different radial locations on the torque transmission disks to detect the strength of the electromagnetic field. Based on the strength of the electromagnetic field, the amount of torque being transmitted from the input shaft to the output shaft can be adjusted. Also disclosed is a distributed actuation architecture that uses this clutch system. The distributed actuation architecture allows for the use of a single drive motor in conjunction with multiple instances of the clutch system to actuate a mechanical linkage, such as a robotic arm.
