    Abstract: The present invention relates to a sensing device for monitoring aircraft brake assemblies, in particular the sensing device is for monitoring wear and/or temperature of the aircraft brake assembly. The device comprises a housing rigidly connected to the chassis of the aircraft brake assembly, wherein the housing comprises a displacement sensor. The device further comprises a pin extending through the housing with a first end configured to move with a pressure plate of the aircraft brake assembly such that, in use, the pin is configured to move relative to the housing in a longitudinal direction of the pin. The pin comprises a detectable element positioned within the housing, and the displacement sensor is configured to monitor the position of the detectable element within the housing.

    Abstract: A motor includes a brake diagnostics system with sensors to assess the brake assembly condition. Acoustic or other vibration sensors provide vibration data that is compared to known vibration spectrum data to compare the condition of the brake assembly to a properly functioning brake assembly. The brake diagnostics system monitors current flow in the brake coil to assess the condition of the brake assembly. The sensed brake coil current is compared to known coil current spectrum data to compare the condition of the brake assembly to a properly functioning brake assembly. The voltage input to the brake coil is varied depending upon the current sensed in the brake coil to minimize heat in the brake coil. The motor also includes a resilient layer of thermally conductive material located between the brake assembly and the housing that provides a continuous, uninterrupted thermal pathway between the brake assembly and the motor housing.

    Abstract: A brake is operationally coupled by gear engagement to an axle of a device, whereby turning on the brake prevents the axle from rotating. Monitoring condition of the brake includes driving the axle of the device in a first rotation direction when the brake has been turned on. The axle of the device is driven in a second rotation direction when the brake has been turned on. A first position angle of the axle of the device, which follows from driving the axle of the device in the first rotation direction, is measured. A second position angle of the axle of the device, which follows from driving the axle of the device in the second rotation direction, is measured. A clearance of the gear engagement of the brake is determined on the basis of a difference of the first and the second position angles.
