Abstract: A brake pad wear sensing system for measuring brake pad wear for a vehicle disc brake system includes a brake pad wear sensor including a near field communication (“NFC”) circuit for transmitting an NFC signal and a tank circuit including a resonating component and a charge storage component. The tank circuit powers the brake pad wear sensor including the NFC circuit. The tank circuit is configured to be inductively charged in response to interrogation by a NFC device positioned within a predetermined proximity of the brake pad wear sensor. The NFC circuit is configured to respond to the interrogation by the NFC device to transmit the NFC signal. The resonating component or the charge storage component has a physical condition or effective component value that is configured to be degraded in response to brake pad wear. The degradation of the resonating component or the charge storage component reducing the signal strength with which the NFC signal is transmitted. When a NFC or equivalent device has capability of determining the peak frequency response, then more accurate frequency determination method can be used.

Abstract: A brake pad monitoring sensor includes an erodible, electrically non-conductive body, and an electrical circuit disposed within the body. The electrical circuit includes a first wear indicating portion. Electrical continuity of the first wear indicating portion is broken when the body erodes, in response to abrasion against a brake rotor, beyond a first depth relative to a contact surface of the body, to sense a first degree of wear. The electrical circuit includes a first thermocouple that is operable to generate a temperature dependent voltage signal for sensing a temperature of the brake pad. The brake pad monitoring sensor may be used to determine both brake pad wear, and brake pad temperature.

Abstract: In some examples, a brake wear measurement system includes an emitter configured to emit a signal and a passive powered sensor system including a controller and a sensor configured to sense the signal emitted by the emitter. The emitter and the sensor of the sensor system are mounted on the brake assembly such as the emitter and the sensor may be configured to move relative to each other as the brake disc stack wears. Thus, a characteristic of the signal emitted by the emitter and sensed by the sensor may change as a function of the brake disc stack wear. The brake wear measurement may further include a processor configured to receive the output generated by the sensor and determine, based on the output, an amount of wear of the brake disc stack assembly.

Abstract: A brake lining wear sensor includes a thermoplastic body that is secured to a support plate between adjacent brake lining blocks. The support plate includes an opening formed within a gap between adjacent lining blocks. The thermoplastic body is received within the opening and includes a central bore that extends from a first body end to a second body end. A sensor wire is received within the bore and includes a single looped portion that extends outwardly from an end face of the second body end. The single looped portion is positioned at a predefined maximum lining wear limit. When the single looped portion is broken due to contact with a rotating brake component, a warning signal is communicated to an operator to indicate that the predefined maximum lining wear limit has been reached.

Abstract: A wear detection probe for detection of wear of a braking member is mounted in or adjacent to the braking member. The wear detection probe includes a holder having a detection wire in a wiring path. The detection wire has a folded portion, and two portions extending from the folded portion in a direction substantially parallel to the surface of the brake rotor. An apex of the folded portion of the detection wire is nearer than the straight portions to the wear surface of the holder, so that after a predetermined amount of wear, the folded portion is broken without breaking the straight portions. The probe is compact, and the wire remains securely in position during use.

Abstract: The invention provides an abrasion detecting probe for a brake pad which does not require insert-moulding and in which production costs are low. A probe 20 is housed in base components 35 and 36, which are snap-fitted together. In this manner, the terminal 22 can be attached within the base member 21 in a precise predetermined position by the simple operation of joining the base components 35 and 36 together. Therefore, as opposed to a conventional probe, insert-moulding is not required and the probe can be manufactured simply and cheaply. A sleeve 50 may provide an audible brake wear warning.
