    摘要: An electronic postal scale measures the weight of an item in metric or in avoirdupois units, at the user's election. The scale also calculates a postal or shipping rate for the item, in accordance with a stored rate table defined in either metric or avoirdupois units. When the user selects a class of service, the scale determines whether there is a stored rate table for that class in the currently elected weight units. If not, the scale automatically changes to the other weight units and calculates a rate according to a stored table in those other units.

    摘要: A postal scale having an improved response time to determine appropriate postage amounts and including an improved postal weighing algorithm. The scale includes a transducer which produces a sequence of digital output signals representative of the instantaneous response of a scale and a microprocessor which detects the presence of mail pieces on the scale and determines estimates of the weight of the mail pieces as a function of subsequences of digital output signals, and uses these estimates to determine appropriate postage amounts. The algorithm used in the scale of the subject invention takes advantage of the fact that postal rate charts (i.e. postal rates as a function of weight) are, in general, step-like (i.e. are constant over ranges between predetermined weight breakpoints). The processor examines sequences of digital output signals and makes a first estimate of the weight of the mail pieces and determines the distance from the first estimate to the closest breakpoint. If the distance is sufficiently great the first estimate may be used safely to determine the appropriate postage amount. If the distance is close a second more accurate estimate is then made and used to determine the appropriate postage amount.

    摘要: A mailing system for metering batches of mixed weight mail. The system includes a demand feed for singulating mailpieces, a weighing module for weighing the singulated mailpieces and determining the appropriate postage amount and a postage meter responsive to the weighing module for metering each singulated mailpiece with the appropriate postage amount. A transport system sequentially transports singulated mailpieces from the feeder to the weighing module when the postage meter is set then stops during the weighing period. The postage meter is set for the next sequential mailpiece only after weighing and metering are both completed. In another embodiment a mechanical buffer is provided between the weighing module and the meter to allow overlapping of weighing time with meter setting time. In still another embodiment the weighing time is reduced by a modified weighing algorithm which uses a reduced number of samples to determine the weight of a singulated mailpiece when the initial indication of weight is not close to a breakpoint in the postal rates. In another embodiment of the invention the postage meter is modified to initiate common preliminary meter setting functions in response to the presence of a mailpiece on the weighing module and before the appropriate postage amount is determined.

    摘要: A postal rate memory module is disclosed. The module includes a memory which stores current postal data and an integral battery. The module may be used in a postal scale which includes a scale for determining the weight of an item to be mailed, a memory module for storing postal rate information, a data entry apparatus for entering postal information relating to the item and a processor operatively connected to; the scale, the postal rate memory module and the data entry apparatus, for determining the appropriate postage for the item in accordance with the weight, the entered postal information and the postal rate information. The battery has sufficient capacity to provide at least a significant portion of the power supply and is automatically replaced each time the memory module is replaced with a module containing updated postal rate information so that the user is not burdened with the need to stock and replace batteries.
