A preferred embodiment of a bed assembly for flat bed trucks has a square bale retriever at the rear of the flat bed that includes a pair of lift arms adapted to grasp a bale by its opposite ends and lift it up off the ground and onto a transverse feeder located at the front of the bed. Once deposited on the feeder, a pusher engages one end of the bale and pushes the bale along the feeder to progressively advance successive flakes of the bale into a discharging position off the remote end of the feeder. The bale can thus be progressively distributed one flake at a time, the frequency of flake discharge being controlled by the operator in the cab of the truck. Alternative embodiments for pushers for engaging and advancing the bale toward the discharge point are disclosed. The feeder may be utilized separate from the bed assembly and includes a ramp that causes the bale to move up an incline during feeding operations.

An apparatus for loading bales of agricultural products into a protective sheath. The apparatus includes a mobile framework adaptable at one end for connection with a vehicle. A detachable bale bagger is received at an end opposite the vehicle and supports a corrugation of protective sheath. In an attached mode, the apparatus is adaptable to retrieve, transport, handle and sheath bales of agricultural products. A lifting unit is adapted to retrieve bales from a location and mount them in an end-to-end fashion along parallel rails of the mobile framework. As bales are individually retrieved and loaded, a bale moving device movably connected to the mobile framework, rearwardly displaces the incoming bales a distance along parallel rails so as to make space for the next bale. Once the mobile framework is loaded with bales, the apparatus is transported to a location suitable for storage. Located at a storage site, a bale bagger is oriented in a stationary engaging position for connection with the mobile framework and includes an open-ended drum supporting a corrugation of protective sheath. The mobile framework, containing a plurality of bales, approaches the stationary bale bagger in a reverse orientation such that a first and a second attachment unit respectively located thereon, are aligned for connection. In the attached mode, the bale moving device is adapted to move the plurality of bales rearwardly along the mobile framework and through the open-ended drum of the bale bagger. Simultaneous with the rearward displacement of the bales, the vehicle pulls the apparatus forwardly such that the corrugation of protective sheath can be extended a distance to receive the incoming bale as it is passed through the open-ended drum. The bale bagger is attachable to the mobile framework such that it can be secured in an upright position and safely transported a distance when the framework is in operable connection with a vehicle.

The invention is an apparatus for safely and efficiently loading, transporting and unloading bales, such as bales of hay. The invention includes a wheeled frame upon which a cab and bed are mounted for self-propelled locomotion across fields, lots, and roads. A bale carriage includes a pair of bale grabber arms which pivot to securely grab or clamp, and release, a bale. The bale carriage is powered for movement along an immobile carriage track overarching the cab, so that the bale may be grabbed and safely and reliably lifted along the carriage track from a position in front of the cab and deposited upon the bed in back of the cab. A push pan pushes successively deposited bales from the front of the bed toward the back of the bed to allow room for later-loaded bales. The entire bed is pivotal from a horizontal position to a vertical position. Powered side arms pivotally attached to the bed function selectively to grip and release the bales placed upon the bed, so that the bed may be pivoted between the vertical and the horizontal positions while the bales are held thereon to permit stacked bales to be loaded and unloaded en mass.

A bale handling and transporting apparatus has a bale handler on a trailer or body which can be positioned to pick up bales located on either side of the body. The bale handler may have an upright boom, a boom arm, and a bale gripper. The boom is pivoted to move the boom arm and the bale gripper to either side of the body. The boom may be adjusted in length and lowered to place a bale within jaws of the bale gripper. A stabilizer supports the body during the bale lifting operation. The boom and boom arm are operated to lift the bale onto the trailer or body. A conveyor belt shifts bales along the length of the trailer in either direction. The belt is keyed to the trailer to prevent sideways shifting of the belt relative to the trailer body, such as when the trailer is on a hillside. The body may be articulated with first and second bed sections. When empty, one of the bed sections may be pivoted or otherwise positioned to overlie the other bed section to reduce the overall length of the trailer. The rear end of the rearmost bed section may be lowered and a tailgate dropped to facilitate bale unloading.

A ground engaging wheeled trailer includes an elongated chassis having a horizontal deck overlying an upright rolled, hair pin shaped I-beam track including a horizontal section extending the length of the deck, an integral vertical section extending downwardly at the rear of the deck, and an integral, forwardly and upwardly inclined third section. A plurality of cars are mounted for movement on the track by car wheels engaging opposite side recesses within the I-beam track. Each car includes a hinged plate at a radially outboard position on the car. A U-shaped cam follower yoke is fixedly mounted to a spear adjacent the hinged plate and carries cam follower rolls to opposite sides thereof for engaging with respective camming bars to opposite sides of the track third sections. Cam slots formed by spaced camming rails forward of the track third section cause the hinged plates to pivot to a position such that the spears carried thereby are horizontal and generally parallel to the longitudinal axis of the cars. The cars are fixedly coupled to a chain at longitudinally spaced positions over the length of the car corresponding to desired spacing of the impaled round hay bales on the trailer deck.

A bale squeezing frame is mounted to the lifting bed opposite to the bale pick-up and is movable toward the bale pick-up.

A baling apparatus is provided for forming large rectangular bales of fibrous material. The apparatus includes a rectangular bale chamber having an inlet for receiving baling material beneath the bale chamber and an outlet for discharging completed bales at the top of the bale chamber. Balable material is gathered from the surface of the field of by the pickup mechanism, formed into a mat by clamping rollers and transported toward the bale chamber by a conveying mechanism. A conveyor sweep apparatus detaches a segment of the mat on the conveyor and feeds it to a compressing mechanism located beneath the bale chamber inlet. The clamping rollers ensure that the mat separates cleanly when engaged by the sweep apparatus. The compressing structure then compresses the segment of baling material in a slow upward compression stroke into the bale chamber inlet. As a result, a rectangular bale comprising successive horizontal layers is formed within the bale chamber. A dedicated structure is provided for tying completed bales within the bale chamber and discharging the bales onto the surface of the field.

A machine for loading, transporting and unloading large bales is capable of operating in a non-stop mode across a field and between the field and an unloading site. The non-stop machine includes a fore-and-aft extending mobile chassis movable over the field, an operator's station mounted at a front end of the mobile chassis, an elongated bale load bed, and a bracing structure supporting the bale load bed in an inclined relation above the mobile chassis with an upper front end of the bed overlying the operator's station at the front end of the mobile chassis and a lower rear end of the bed disposed adjacent to the field at the rear end of the mobile chassis. The non-stop machine also includes a front bale loader and a rear bale gate. The bale front loader is pivotally mounted to a front portion of the bracing structure forwardly of the operator's station and operable for transferring bales from a first orientation on the field, upwardly to a second orientation on the upper front end of the bed in which the bale is inverted relative to the first orientation, where the bales can then slide rearwardly down the bed toward the lower end thereof. The rear bale gate is pivotally mounted at the rear lower end of the bed and is movable between an upright stop position wherein the bales are retained on the load bed and a lower discharge position wherein the bales are permitted to slide from the load bed across the rear gate to the unloading site.
