    Abstract: An electric phaser for dynamically adjusting a rotational relationship of a camshaft with respect to an engine crankshaft of an internal combustion engine includes an electric motor and a tapered roller drive. The tapered roller drive includes a sun, rollers, a carrier, at least one ring, and at least one load generator providing an axial load. The rollers are maintained in rolling engagement with the sun and the ring without the use of teeth. In some embodiments, the tapered roller drive is based on a fixed-sun design. In other embodiments, the tapered roller drive is based on a split ring design.

A planetary gear system including a first component drivingly connected to the camshaft. A motor is drivingly connected to a second component of the planetary gear system and a sprocket is driven by the internal combustion engine and drivingly connected to a third component of the planetary gear system. A controller controls operation of the motor for selectively driving the second component at a same speed as the third component for imparting rotation to the camshaft and for selectively preventing rotation of the second component of the planetary gear system for preventing rotation of the camshaft.

    Abstract: An electric cam phasing system is provided. The electric cam phasing system includes an electric motor including a center shaft; a camshaft; a center fastener extending into a center of the camshaft and a gearbox including a sprocket and a drive unit. The drive unit includes an input shaft coupling connected to the center shaft. The drive unit is configured for coupling the camshaft to the sprocket in a manner such that relative phasing of the camshaft with respect to sprocket is adjustable via the electric motor driving the drive unit. The electric cam phasing system also includes a lock positioned axially between the center shaft and the camshaft, the lock being configured for selectively engaging the center fastener to lock the gearbox.

    Abstract: A communicating hole, which communicates between a clearance space and the outside of a cover member, is formed in the cover member, and a seal cap is fitted to and retained in a distal-end opening of the communicating hole. The seal cap includes a cap main body having a ventilation through hole formed in an internal axial direction and an outer peripheral wall configured to engage with the communicating hole, a supporting portion fitted, from the outside, into a recessed groove formed in an outside end face of the cap main body, and a ventilation filter located on a bottom face of the recessed groove and retained and sandwiched between the cap main body and the supporting portion. Therefore, an internal pressure rise in the clearance space between the cover member and an electric motor can be effectively suppressed, and thus improved mountability and retainability can be obtained.

    Abstract: A system (42) including a phaser (28), a motor (38), and a controller (40) for controlling the phase between a camshaft (18) and a crankshaft (16) of an engine (10). The phaser (28) is attached to the camshaft (18), is in communication with the crankshaft (16), and is configured to adjust the phase of the camshaft (18). The motor (38) actuates the phaser (28) and is operatively attached to and in communication with the phaser (28) such that rotation of the crankshaft (16) back-drives the motor (38) to subsequently generate a signal. The controller (40) is in electrical communication with the motor (38), is responsive to the signal, and uses the signal to determine the rotational speed of the motor (38) to thereby commutate the motor (38) and subsequently drive the motor (38) so as to actuate the phaser (28) and control the phase of the camshaft (18).
