Abstract: An electromechanical camshaft phaser (3) comprises a setting gear (4) and an electric motor (5), which is controlled by means of an electric-motor control unit (6). Data concerning the operation of the electric motor (5) including position changes of its motor shaft are transferred via a data bus (8) from the electric-motor control unit (6) to an engine control unit (7) of the internal combustion engine (1) comprising the camshaft phaser (3). In addition, recurring time signals are transferred from the electric-motor control unit (6) to the engine control unit (7) via a separate line (9), by which harder real-time requirements are met than by the data bus (8). The time signals are used to generate a time difference signal in the engine control unit (7) by comparison with the data received by the engine control unit (7), which time difference signal is fed back to the electric-motor control unit (6) via the data bus (8) and is used there to synchronize the electric-motor control unit (6) with the engine control unit (7).

Abstract: A housing is rotatable synchronously with a crankshaft of an engine. A plurality of external teeth arrangements is respectively shaped into a ring form and is formed integrally with the housing in one piece and is configured to mesh with a plurality of chains, respectively, each of which is wound around the crankshaft or a sprocket that is rotatable. A cam plate is connected to a camshaft of the engine and is rotatable relative to the housing. A plurality of stoppers is formed integrally with the housing in one piece while the stoppers are configured to limit relative rotation between the housing and the cam plate within a predetermined range when the stoppers contact the cam plate. Each stopper is placed at a position, at which the stopper does not overlap with any of the external teeth arrangements in a view taken in an axial direction of the housing.

Abstract: A camshaft phaser comprising an advance one-way clutch and a retard one-way clutch. The camshaft phaser comprises an input component arranged to receive torque from an engine, an advance inner ring, a plurality of rollers circumferentially arranged around the advance inner ring, an advance outer ring radially disposed between the input component and the advance inner ring, and an actuation assembly arranged to be disposed within a camshaft, the actuation assembly comprises advance locking pin assemblies arranged in advance channels and an actuator rod. For an advanced mode, the actuator rod is arranged to radially displace advance locking pin assemblies to non-rotatably connect the camshaft and advance inner ring, the rollers ride up ramps on advance outer ring, which expands radially to engage the input component. The retard clutch is substantially similar, and arranged diametrically opposed, to the advance clutch.

After an opening timing of the exhaust valve, an advancing operation is effected for displacing the relative rotational phase in the advancing direction relative to the opening timing.

Abstract: An electric cam phasing system is provided. The electric cam phasing system includes an electric motor including a center shaft; a camshaft; a center fastener extending into a center of the camshaft and a gearbox including a sprocket and a drive unit. The drive unit includes an input shaft coupling connected to the center shaft. The drive unit is configured for coupling the camshaft to the sprocket in a manner such that relative phasing of the camshaft with respect to sprocket is adjustable via the electric motor driving the drive unit. The electric cam phasing system also includes a lock positioned axially between the center shaft and the camshaft, the lock being configured for selectively engaging the center fastener to lock the gearbox.

Abstract: An engine variable camshaft timing phaser (10) includes a sprocket (12), three ring gears (26, 28, 30), multiple planet gears (24), and a sun gear (22). The sprocket (12) receives rotational drive input from an engine crankshaft. One or more of the three ring gear(s) (26, 28, 30) receives rotational drive input from the sprocket (12) and rotates with the sprocket (12), and the remaining ring gear(s) (26, 28, 30) transmit rotational drive output to an engine camshaft (62). All three of the ring gears (26, 28, 30) engage with the planet gears (24). And the sun gear (22) also engages with the planet gears (24). In operation, relative rotational speeds between the sprocket (12) and the sun gear (22) causes the engine camshaft (62) to advance or retard engine valve opening and closing.
