A composition useful as a catalyst in solution polymerization comprises (1) a barium, calcium and/or strontium alcoholate, (2) an organoaluminum compound and (3) an organomagnesium compound. (2) and (3) may be used as a complex with (1). The compositions can be used to polymerize ethylenically unsaturated monomers like butadiene, butadiene and styrene, and isoprene and heterocyclic monomers like oxiranes, thiiranes, siloxanes, thiatanes and lactams. The catalyst composition can produce polybutadienes and butadiene-styrene copolymers having a trans-1,4 content as high as 90%. The non-terminating features of the polymerization of this invention permit the preparation of functionally terminated butadiene based polymers and block polymers containing sufficient amounts of trans-1,4 butadiene units to crystallize.

A polymerization process for vicinal alkylene oxides and a catalyst for said polymerization process where the catalyst comprises a composition prepared by contacting an alkyl aluminum compound with an organic nitrogen base compound selected from secondary nitrogen-containing compounds having basicity less than or about equal to the basicity of dimethylamine, with a .beta.-diketone and with water where the components are combined in prescribed molar ratios. The molecular weight of the resultant polymers produced in a process utilizing such a catalyst may be controlled by adjusting the ratio of the secondary amine component and very high molecular weight polymers may be obtained, as determined by their intrinsic viscosities. The very high molecular weight polymeric products are useful as elastomers and as thickeners for various aqueous or organic solutions.

A process for the anionic polymerization or copolymerization of olefinic monomers, dienic monomers, vinyl monomers and heterocyclic monomers is described which comprises reacting at least one monomer which is an olefinic monomer, a vinyl monomer or an heterocyclic monomer with a catalyst capable of inducing anionic polymerization and an aprotic macroheterocyclic cryptant, said at least one monomer being the only medium for the reaction.The macroheterocyclic complexing agent has general formula ##STR1## in which: R.sub.1 is hydrogen, a hydrocarbon radical or alkoxycarbonyl, or the two R.sub.1 together can form a group of the general formula: ##STR2## in which A is a hydrocarbon radical,D is oxygen, sulfur, or a hydrocarbon radical, with the proviso that at leat two of the D groups are oxygen or sulfur and that if R.sub.1 is hydrogen, a hydrocarbon radical or alkoxycarbonyl, one of these two D groups is oxygen or sulfur and the other is oxygen, andn and p are integers from 1 to 3 and m is 2 or 3.

Improvements in conversion, yield and reaction rate are realized by contacting the epoxide at a temperature below 0.degree. C. with at least a catalytic amount of the organoaluminum compound in the presence of at least 0.1 mole, per mole of aluminum, of a perhalogenated aliphatic monoketone which is preferably hexafluoroacetone.
