    Abstract: Aspects of the disclosure relate to controlling a vehicle having an autonomous driving mode. For instance, that the vehicle is approaching a crosswalk may be determined. A set of segments may be identified for the crosswalk. A set of potential occluded pedestrians may be generated. Each potential occluded pedestrian of the set is assigned a speed characteristic and a segment. The segments of the set of potential occluded pedestrians may be updated over time using the assigned speed characteristics. Sensor data from a perception system of the vehicle is received, and one or more potential occluded pedestrians an having an updated assigned segment corresponding to a segment that is visible to a perception system of the vehicle may be removed from the set of potential occluded pedestrians. After the removing, the set may be used to control the vehicle in the autonomous driving mode.

    Abstract: A camera includes a camera focus adjustment device, a lens, and an image sensor coupled to the camera focus adjustment device. The camera focus adjustment device includes a flexure structure. The flexure structure includes an outer framework of structural members continuously interconnected by flexure notch hinges. The flexure structure also includes two inner structural members oriented in parallel and extending from the outer framework of structural members. A gap is between the two inner structural members. The camera focus adjustment device also includes a piezoelectric material within the gap and a pair of wedges within the gap. The pair of wedges is affixed to the piezoelectric material and to one inner structural member of the two inner structural members. Based on temperature-based piezoelectric activity associated with the piezoelectric material, the camera focus adjustment device is operable to move the image sensor relative to the lens.

    Abstract: The disclosure relates to testing software for operating an autonomous vehicle. For instance, a first simulation may be run. The simulation may be run using the software to control a simulated vehicle and at least one agent. During the running of the first simulation, whether a particular type of interaction between the simulated vehicle and the at least one agent has occurred may be determined. In response to this determination, a second simulation may be run using the log data by replacing the at least one agent with a model agent that simulates a road user capable of responding to actions performed by the simulated vehicle. The second simulation may be used to determine in order to determine whether the software is able to complete the second simulation without the particular type of interaction between a second simulated vehicle and the model agent occurring.

An example device may include an image sensor, a clock input, and a controller. The controller includes at least one processor and a memory.     Abstract: A simulation for sensor data may be evaluated and used for future simulations for an autonomous vehicle software. The method includes receiving log data collected for an environment along a given run for a given vehicle, using a software for autonomous driving to perform a simulated run of the given run using logged sensor data from the log data and environment data constructed using the log data, and determining first details regarding detection of objects during the given run using logged sensor data. The method also includes using the software to run a simulation of one or more detection devices on a simulated vehicle driving along the given run to obtain simulated sensor data, and determining second details regarding detection of objects using the simulated sensor data. Metrics may then be extracted from the first details and the second details, and the simulation may be evaluated based on the metrics.

    Abstract: Aspects of the disclosure relate to detecting unmapped drivable road surfaces. In one instance, sensor data captured by a sensor of an autonomous vehicle may be projected onto a grid having a plurality of cells. The plurality of cells may be classified by generating a label for each of the plurality of cells. Each label may identifies whether or not a corresponding cell contains a drivable surface. Ones of the plurality of cells may be clustered based on the labels to form a cluster of cells. An area of the cluster of cells may be compared to a map. Whether the area of the cluster of cells is an unmapped drivable road surface may be determined based on the comparison.
