Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communication are described for selecting different uplink transmission parameters for transmission or retransmission of a random access message. A user equipment (UE) may transmit or retransmit a random access message such as a layer 2 or layer 3 (L2/L3) message to a base station during a random access procedure. The UE may select a transmission beam, uplink resource or transmission power for the transmission of the L2/L3 message that differ from those used for transmission of a previous random access message. The selection may be based on path loss associated with synchronization signals or previous transmissions. The selection may also be based on a maximum number of retransmissions.

Abstract: Techniques are described herein for reordering beams used to transmit reference signals for subsequent beam sweeps of a beam management procedure. Beams used to transmit reference signals may be hierarchically ordered to enable a user equipment (UE) to terminate the beam management procedure early and thereby conserve power while operating in a discontinuous reception mode. A base station may transmit reference signals using a first ordered set of beams as part of a first beam sweep. The UE may transmit feedback information to the base station about the signal quality for at least some of the reference signals. The base station may generate a second ordered set of beams based on the feedback information. The base station may transmit the reference signals using the second ordered set of beams as part of a second beam sweep.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described that provide for system information (SI) for access and backhaul. An access node (AN) may provide SI to devices within its cell indicating communication procedure configurations. The AN may provide SI to devices that is specific to whether the communication procedure is an access procedure or a backhaul procedure. The AN may transmit a common master information block (MIB) directing the devices within its cell to a search space in order to receive the remaining SI. The search space may be shared between access devices and backhaul devices or alternatively may be separate between access and backhaul devices. The remaining SI may not be shared between access and backhaul devices. The devices may determine different configurations as defined by the SI from the AN for communications procedures based on whether the procedure is an access procedure or a backhaul procedure.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communication are described. A base station may identify a sounding reference signal (SRS) configuration for user equipment (UE). The base station may transmit an SRS grant message to a UE indicating the SRS configuration. An indication of SRS parameters may be included in the SRS grant message, and may include the SRS parameters or a location of the SRS parameters. That is, SRS parameters may be transmitted in a control channel with the SRS grant message or may be separately sent in a data channel as indicated by the indication of SRS parameters. In some cases, SRS parameters may be determined based on previously received UE feedback regarding channel conditions or power limitations. Alternatively, the base station may make its own environment measurements or assign SRS parameters autonomously. The UE may signal SRS transmissions to the base station according to the SRS grant message.

Abstract: Certain aspects of the present disclosure relate to methods and apparatus for phase noise estimation in data symbols for millimeter wave (mmW). A method for wireless communications by a transmitting device is provided. The method generally includes identifying a phase noise metric associated with at least one receiving device; determining a phase noise pilot configuration based, at least in part, on the identified phase noise metric; and providing an indication of the phase noise pilot configuration to the at least one receiving device. A receiving device can receive the phase noise pilots in accordance with the configuration and determine phase noise for a data symbol based on the received phase noise pilots.

Abstract: A UE may receive, from a base station, through a set of beams a set of BRSs. The UE may measure a signal quality of each BRS of the set of BRSs, and each measured signal quality may correspond to a beam of the set of beams. In an aspect, the UE may maintain a set of candidate beam indexes corresponding to a set of best measured signal qualities of the set of BRSs. In an aspect, the UE may transmit, to the base station, information indicating at least one measured signal quality and at least one beam index from the set of maintained candidate beam indexes, and the at least one beam index may correspond to the at least one measured signal quality.

The apparatus may receive the first beam associated with the first type of channel and the second beam associated with the second type of channel. In an aspect, the first beam and the second beam may be received from a second device.

Abstract: Techniques are provided for power control in directional beam environments. A user equipment (UE) may determine one or more power parameters on a beam-by-beam basis. Each directional uplink transmission beam in a communication link between the UE and the base station may be independently controlled using these beam-specific power parameters. Examples of these beam-specific power parameters may include a maximum output power for a given directional uplink transmission beam and a difference between the maximum output power for the given directional uplink transmission beam and an estimated transmit power for the given directional uplink transmission beam. The UE may report one or more of these beam-specific power parameters to a base station using a beam-specific report.
