    Abstract: A method of manufacturing an induction motor rotor assembly, the method includes the steps of: providing a rotor; machining a plurality of re-entrant slots axially along an outer surface of the rotor; positioning a sleeve concentrically over the outer surface of the rotor; applying a friction stir welding process to the sleeve along each re-entrant slot axially along the outer surface of the rotor to cause the sleeve material to plasticise and flow into the axial re-entrant slot to form an axial re-entrant slot bar; and providing an electrical connection at each of the opposing axial ends of the rotor between respective ones of opposing ends of each of the axial re-entrant slot bars to thereby form the induction motor rotor.

    Abstract: Electrical systems for connecting rotary electric machines with gas turbine spools are provided. One such electrical system comprises: a first rotary electric machine mechanically coupled with a first gas turbine spool and a second rotary electric machine mechanically coupled with a second gas turbine spool, each said electric machine having an identical even number N≥4 of phases, each phase having a respective index n=(1, . . . , N), and each phase comprising an identical number P≥1 of coils wound in a P-plex configuration in which adjacent phases are radially separated by 2π/NP mechanical radians; a first set of N bidirectional converter circuits for conversion of alternating current (ac) to and from direct current (dc), each converter circuit having a respective index n and being connected with the P coils in the nth phase of the first rotary electric machine; and a second set of N bidirectional converter circuits for conversion of ac to and from dc, each converter circuit having a respective index n and being connected with the P coils in the nth phase of the second rotary electric machine. For all n, a dc side of the nth converter circuit in said first set is connected with a dc side of the nth converter circuit in said second set to facilitate dc power transfer between the first gas turbine spool and the second gas turbine spool.

    Abstract: A computer-based method for automated operation of an unmanned waterborne vessel is provided. The method includes steps of: providing a mission plan for the vessel, the mission plan defining a desired activity of the vessel over a period of time; determining different possible configurations of machinery of the vessel to fulfil the mission plan; ranking the possible machinery configurations; selecting a highest ranked machinery configuration; and formulating an engineering plan which implements the selected machinery configuration in order to operate the vessel in accordance with the mission plan; and executing the engineering plan.

    Abstract: A gas turbine engine for an aircraft includes an engine core, fan, air intake and gearbox. The engine core includes a turbine, compressor, and core shaft connecting the turbine and compressor. The fan is located upstream of the core and includes a plurality of fan blades, the fan having a diameter greater than 2.0 m. The air intake is located upstream of the fan and has ratio of intake length to fan diameter of 0.20 to 0.60 and defines highlight, throat and diffuser areas. The gearbox receives an input from the core shaft and outputs drive to the fan so as to drive the fan at a lower rotational speed than the core shaft. The gas turbine engine has a bypass ratio greater than 10; and the air intake has an intake length and the ratio of the intake length to the fan diameter is from 0.20 to 0.60.

    Abstract: A power electronics unit for an aircraft and a method of determining the integrity of a power electronics unit are provided. The power electronics unit comprises an electric machine controller; a heatsink arranged to conduct heat from the electric machine controller; a housing comprising a sealed internal volume enclosing the electric machine controller and heatsink; a dielectric liquid partially filling the internal volume to cover the electric machine controller; a gas pocket within the internal volume; a pressure sensor arranged to measure a pressure of gas within the gas pocket; a temperature sensor arranged to measure a temperature within the internal volume; and a controller. The controller is configured to receive signals from the pressure sensor and temperature sensor, determine a pressure and temperature from the received signals and provide an output signal dependent on the determined temperature and pressure.

    Abstract: An electrical machine has a stator carrying electrical windings which protrude at opposite ends of the stator to form respective, ring-shaped end windings. The electrical machine further has a rotor having a plurality of magnetic field-producing elements for producing a rotor magnetic field which interacts with a stator magnetic field produced by the windings. The electrical machine further has a coolant bath for holding liquid coolant. The electrical machine further has a heat sink in thermal contact with at least one of the end windings, the bath and the heat sink being configured such that the heat sink is immersed in the coolant held in the bath. The heat sink defines one or more fluid pathways configured such that vapour bubbles, formed when coolant in contact with the heat sink boils, escape by rising through the heat sink.

    Abstract: A fluid transfer coupling comprises a first shaft assembly a second shaft assembly, and a seal assembly. The first shaft assembly comprises a first shaft and an annular fin attached to the first shaft, the annular fin having one or more internal passages extending therethrough. Each internal passage connects a centre portion of the first shaft to a radially outwardly facing side of the annular fin.
