摘要: The present invention relates to a glass matrix which includes 4-70 wt. % SiO2, 0.5-20 wt. % Al2O3, 0-20 wt. % R2O, 0-30 wt. % R′O, 8-85 wt. % Ta2O5, 0-40 wt. % Nb2O5, and 0.01-1.0 wt. % R″2O3, where R2O+R″O is between about 2-35 wt. %, Ta2O5+Nb2O5 is between about 8-85 wt. %, R is selected from a group consisting of Li, Na, K, and combinations thereof, R′ is selected from a group consisting of Ba, Sr, Ca, Mg, Zn, Pb, and combinations thereof, and R″ is a rare earth element. The present invention also relates to use of the glass matrix in forming optic waveguides such as optic amplifiers. The present invention further relates to a transparent glass ceramic that contains pyrochlore, perovskite, or a combination thereof as its major crystal phase, and includes 4-40 wt. % SiO2, 1-15 wt. % Al2O3, 0-20 wt. % K2O, 0-12 wt. % Na2O, 0-5 wt. % Li2O, 8-85 wt. % Ta2O5, and 0-45 wt. % Nb2O5, wherein Ta2O5+Nb2O5 is at least about 20 wt. % and (K2O+Li2O+Na2O) is between about 5-20 wt. %. Also disclosed is a method of making the glass ceramic and use of the glass ceramic as a ferro-electric component in electro-optical devices or as a filtering core in an optical filtering device.

摘要: The subject invention is directed at glasses wherein either a portion of the ZnO or alkali metals, or both, is replaced by Cu.sub.2 O, i.e., monovalent copper. Specifically, the present invention is directed at a glass consisting essentially of, expressed in terms of mole percent on the oxide basis, 28-42% P.sub.2 O.sub.5, 15-30% Cu.sub.2 O, 10-30% R.sub.2 O, wherein R.sub.2 O is selected from the group consisting of 0-15% Li.sub.2 O, 0-20% Na.sub.2 O, and 0-10% K.sub.2 O, and up to a total of 45% of optional ingredients in the indicated proportions selected from the group consisting of 0-10% Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, 0-15% MgO, 0-20% CaO, 0-20% SrO, 0-20% BaO, 0-25% MgO+CaO+SrO+BaO, 0-35% ZnO, 0-10% MnO, 0-2% CeO.sub.2, 0-2% Ln.sub.2 O.sub.3, 0-10 Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 0-10% B.sub.2 O.sub.3, 0-10 Fe.sub.2 O.sub.3 0-10% Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 +B.sub.2 O.sub.3 +Fe.sub.2 O.sub.3, 0-7% MoO.sub.3 0-7% WO.sub.3 0-7% MoO.sub.3 +WO.sub.3, and 0-8% F, the latter as analyzed in weight percent. In addition, it is necessary that the predominate proportion of the copper in the glass is present in the cuprous or Cu.sup.+ oxidation state. These inventive glasses exhibit a transition temperature normally below about 300.degree. C., a working temperature below about 400.degree. C., while, at the same time, exhibiting excellent resistance to attack by water.

摘要: The subject invention is directed at wherein either a portion of the ZnO or alkali metals, or both, found in prior art glasses, is replaced by Cu.sub.2 O, i.e., cuprous or monovalent copper. In addition to the Cu.sub.2 O substitution, the inventive glass contains a required metal oxide constituent which is necessary to enhance durability. More specifically, the present invention discloses a glass consisting essentially of, expressed in terms of mole percent on the oxide basis, of about 42-54% P.sub.2 O.sub.5, 10-30% Cu.sub.2 O, 10-30% R.sub. O and 3-12% of a component selected from the group consisting of 0-7% MoO.sub.3, 0-10 Fe.sub.2 O.sub.3, 0-10% Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 and 0-7%WO.sub.3. In addition, the composition includes up to a total of 45% of optional ingredients in the indicated proportions selected from the group consisting of 0-15% MgO, 0-20% CaO, 0-20% SrO, 0-20% BaO, 0-25% MgO+CaO+SrO+BaO, 0-35% ZnO, 0-10% MnO, 0-2% CeO.sub.2, 0-10% B.sub.2 O.sub.3, 0-2% Ln.sub.2 O.sub.3 , 0-8% F, the latter as analyzed in weight percent. The R.sub.2 O constituent is selected from the group consisting of 0-15% Li.sub.2 O, 0-20% Na.sub.2 O, and 0-10% K.sub.2 O. Furthermore, the Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 +Fe.sub.2 O.sub.3 does not exceed 10% and the MoO.sub.3 +WO.sub.3 does not exceed 7%. One final requirement of the glass is that the predominate proportion of the copper is present in the Cu.sup.+ or monovalent oxidation state.

摘要: This invention is directed to the production of transparent glasses exhibiting excellent transmission far into the infrared region of the electromagnetic radiation spectrum, said glasses consisting essentially, expressed in terms of mole percent on the sulfide basis, of 55-95% GeS.sub.2, 2-40% As.sub.2 S.sub.3, 0.01-20% R.sub.2 S.sub.3, wherein R is at least one trivalent network forming cation selected from the group consisting of gallium and indium, 0-10% MS.sub.x, wherein M is at least one modifying cation selected from the group consisting of aluminum, barium, cadmium, calcium, lead, lithium, mercury, potassium, silver, sodium, strontium, thallium, tin, yttrium, and a rare earth metal of the lanthanide series, 0-20% total of at least one halide selected from the group consisting of chloride and fluoride, 0-5% total selenide, and wherein the sulfur and/or selenium content can vary between 85-125% of the stoichiometric value. The difference between the temperature of the onset of crystallization and the transition temperature of the glasses is at least 150.degree. C. and commonly will be greater than 200.degree. C.

摘要: This invention relates to glasses consisting essentially, by weight, of about 35-72% Ln.sub.2 O.sub.3, 5-37% Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, 29-56% SiO.sub.2, and 4-7.5% N. Up to about one-half of the Ln.sub.2 O.sub.3 on an atomic basis may be replaced with SrO and/or BaO. A transparent glass can be formed which contains about 40-60% on a molar basis of Ln.sub.2 O.sub.3 +SrO and/or BaO and wherein the atomic ratio Sr and/or Ba:Sr and/or Ba+Ln >0.4.

摘要: This invention is directed to the production of self-glazing gas-ceramic articles consisting essentially of very fine-grained cubic BPO.sub.4 crystals and very small gas-containing bubbles uniformly distributed with a SiO.sub.2 -rich residual glassy matrix, the gas within the bubbles consisting predominantly of hydrogen. The inventive articles prepared in three basic steps:(1) melting a batch for a glass consisting essentially, expressed in terms of weight percent on the oxide basis, of 30-60% SiO.sub.2, 10-40% B.sub.2 O.sub.3, 15-45% P.sub.2 O.sub.5, and up to 20% total of at least one compound in the indicated proportion selected from the group consisting of 5-15% BN, 5-10% Si, 5-10% SiC, and 10-20% Si.sub.3 N.sub.4 ;(2) cooling the melt and shaping a glass body therefrom; and(3) heating the glass body between about 900.degree.-1050.degree. C.

摘要: A material is disclosed having improved flame retardant properties and is particularly applicable as a jacket for a fiber optic cable. The material is comprised of a polymeric base compounded with a vanadium phosphate glass composition. The polymeric base may be a flame retardant polyethylene and the vanadium phosphate glass composition contains vanadium oxide, phosphorus oxide and antimony oxide. The material achieves a V-0 rating when tested per Underwriters Laboratory test UL-94 and has a heat release rate value consistent with a self extinguishing material when combusted.
