In some defense-related applications, the use of such materials enables an improved spectral match between different structures, such as vehicles or buildings with the surrounding environment at least in the VIS and NIR wavelength range. This can camouflage the structures, and reduce the detectability thereof by ground-, air- or space-based multi-spectral long-range imaging systems, including aircrafts, drones, and satellites, and thus, generally delay, complicate, or eliminate detection or classification of the camouflaged structures.

Disclosed is a method to produce composite materials, which contain customized mixes of nano- and/or micro-particles with tailored electromagnetic spectral properties, structural elements based thereon, in particular layers, but also bulk materials including inhomogeneous bulk materials. In some embodiments the IR-reflectivity is enhanced predominantly independently of reflectivity for visible wavelength. The enhanced IR-reflectivity is achieved by combining spectral properties from a plurality of nano- and/or micro-particles of distinct size distribution, shape distribution, chemical composition, crystal structure, and crystallinity distribution. This enables to approximate desired target spectra better than know solutions, which comprise only a single type of particles and/or an uncontrolled natural size distribution. Furthermore disclosed are methods of manufacturing such materials, including ceramics, clay, and concrete, as well as applications related to design and construction of buildings or other confined spaces.

A series of renewable bisphenols has been synthesized from creosol (2-methoxy-4-methylphenol) through stoichiometric condensation with short chain aldehydes. Creosol can be readily produced from lignin, potentially allowing for the large scale synthesis of bisphenol A replacements from abundant waste biomass. The renewable bisphenols were isolated in good yield and purity without resorting to solvent intense purification methods. Zinc acetate was shown to be selective catalyst for ortho-coupling of formaldehyde but was unreactive with more sterically demanding aldehydes. Dilute HCl and HBr solutions were shown to be effective catalysts for the selective coupling of aldehydes in the position meta to the phenol. Acid solutions could be recycled and used multiple times without decreases in activity or yield.

The invention relates to a method for manufacturing an insulating composite containing mineral fibers, aerogel and binder. This method implies the step of suspending the fiber webs and aerosol in an air flow thereby disentangling the fiber webs and mixing fibers, aerosol and eventually binder homogeneously. The apparatus described combines spinning of the fibers, collecting them as webs, disentangling the fiber webs in suspended air, mixing the fibers with aerogel and cement as well as pressing and curing the mixture to a consolidated product of density 150 to 800 kg/m3.

The paving material is filled into gaps between blocks and then liquid water is applied thereto, or the sand is exposed to ambient humidity (gaseous water). Upon contact with the water, the resin coats the sand and then sets hard, thereby stabilising the block paving.

The invention relates to a flame retardant polyamide composition, comprising a polyamide polymer, a polyamide prepolymer, a halogen containing flame retardant, and an antimony containing synergist having a low lead content. The composition shows surprisingly improved mechanical properties. The invention also relates to a process for preparing the flame retardant polyamide composition, use the flame retardant polyamide composition for preparing moulded parts and to a moulded part obtainable from the flame retardant polyamide composition.
