Abstract:
A blade having a root portion and an aerofoil portion, wherein the aerofoil portion has a tip remote from the root portion, and a leading edge and a trailing edge, and wherein the tip of the aerofoil portion has a set-back portion extending from the leading edge or the trailing edge of the aerofoil portion part way towards the respective other edge and set back from the remainder of the tip of the aerofoil portion towards the root portion.
Abstract:
A gas turbine engine exhaust nozzle comprises a nozzle body defining a nozzle exit. An array of movable slats is disposed round the nozzle exit. Flow control walls are fixed to the nozzle body and provide flow control surfaces over which the movable slats move. The flow control walls prevent leakage of gas at the edges of the movable slats, so improving performance of the exhaust nozzle.
Abstract:
A water jet propulsion device 10 for a water vehicle, such as a boat, is disclosed. The propulsion device 10 comprises a main duct 12 having a main inlet 14 that is arranged to be submerged in use and a main outlet 16, an impeller 30 disposed within the main duct 12 between the main inlet 14 and the main outlet 16, and at least one auxiliary duct 24 having an auxiliary inlet 26 that is arranged to be submerged in use and an auxiliary outlet 28 that opens into the main duct 12 upstream of the impeller 30.
Abstract:
A shape memory material inductive heating arrangement comprising an array of coils capable of carrying an alternating electrical current and generating a magnetic field, a shape memory element having a first modulus and a second modulus, the second modulus greater than the first, characterised in that the array of coils and shape memory element are in effective range so that when an alternating current is passed through the coils the shape memory element is subject to the magnetic field and heated thereby, the induced heat sufficient to change the modulus of the shape memory material from the first to the second modulus.
Abstract:
A seal (40) provides sealing between two pressure zones (60, 62) and a rotating and non-rotating member (42, 52) by providing a first sealing member (46) between two seal lands (48, 50). A second seal (64) is mounted between the non-rotating member (52, 58) and one of the seal lands (50, 66) so as to control pressure around the seal lands (48, 50).
Abstract:
A gas turbine engine exhaust nozzle arrangement for the flow of exhaust gases therethrough between an upstream end and a downstream end thereof comprising a nozzle and a plurality of tabs which extend in a generally axial direction from a downstream portion of the nozzle wherein the nozzle further comprises an actuation mechanism capable of moving the tabs between a first deployed position, where the tabs interact with a gas stream to reduce exhaust noise thereof, and a second non-deployed position, where the tabs are substantially aerodynamically unobtrusive.
Abstract:
A method of prestressing a component (30) includes the use of an electrical discharge or current to produce a plasma (39) within a medium (32) located adjacent the component (30). The plasma generates a shock wave which impacts a surface of the component to produce a region of compressive residual stress within the component.
Abstract:
A seal arrangement (40) between relatively movable components (42,48) includes at least one magnet (54) on a first component (48) and at least one magnet (56) on the second component (42). A clearance (55) is defined between the at least one magnet (54) on the first component (48) and the at least one magnet (56) on the second component (42). Springs (58) bias the at least one magnet (54) on the first component (48) and the at least one magnet (56) on the second component (42) towards each other. The at least one magnet (54) on the first component (42) and the at least one magnet (56) on the second component (42) are arranged to repel each other against the spring (58) to control the clearance (55).
Abstract:
A portable container and display stand particularly useful for music educational purposes comprising a plurality of hingedly connected panels made from a single sheet of rigid, lightweight material having a plurality of transverse fold lines. One of the panels is fixed in a folded position and attached to the base panel. Light weight borders form an enclosed container area when the various panels are folded, thereby providing a relatively small, lightweight and portable container for transporting and storing papers or other written materials, such as books, magazines or sheet music. Unfolding the various panels to place the device in a display stand mode is a simple process involving easy manipulation of the top two panels. When unfolded, the device forms a display stand for displaying written material in an easily viewable position.
Abstract:
A strain sensor apparatus for a rotatable shaft including an emitter/receiver, a vibration element attached to the shaft and arranged for receiving and reflecting signals to and from the emitter/receiver wherein the vibration element includes asymmetric stiffness properties between a radial and axial and/or circumferential directions relative to a rotational axis of the shaft.
