Abstract:
Persistent media playback techniques are described. In an implementation, a media player is served via a network for display by a browser of a device. Web pages are served via the network for display by the browser of the device. Each of the web pages is configured for integration with the media player so that the media player is persistently displayed by the browser during navigation among the web pages. The media player may be configured to play media files providing a variety of different media types. The media player may also provide contextual suggestions of media.
Abstract:
The invention relates to nucleic acid sequences encoding a bovine tumor necrosis factor receptor-I (TNF-RI). Also within the invention is a soluble bovine TNF-RI, which is a potent inhibitor of bovine tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α). The invention demonstrates that soluble bovine TNF-RI has therapeutic value as an inhibitor of TNF in cattle suffering from coliform mastitis or other inflammatory disease.
Abstract:
A communication bus system comprises a pair of conductors for carrying differential bus signals. A first and second station are connected by the pair of conductors. The system is operable in a selectable one of at least a low speed mode and a high-speed mode. The second station contains resistors each in series with a switch between the pair of conductors and a common node. The impedance connection circuit connects common node to the pair of conductors in the high-speed mode. The resistors provide an impedance to the pair of conductors that substantially matches the transmission line impedance of the pair of conductors. The common point is kept at a bias potential that differs from the reference potential of the receiving circuit. Preferably, a third switch is included between the nodes that join the resistors to the switches. This third switch is switched on and off together with the other switches.
Abstract:
The present invention discloses the use of permanently charged steroid agonists or antagonists as potent anti-angiogenic compositions comprising as an active ingredient a compound of the general formulae I, II or III: wherein DRUG is any steroid agonist or antagonist, a mixed agonist-antagonist, or a partial agonist and the substituents are as defined in the specification.
Abstract:
The invention relates to apparatus and a method for measuring NOx in biochemical processes, and to apparatus and methods for real time measuring the nitrification and/or denitrification rate of a liquid with or without suspended solids.
Abstract:
A method for measuring NO.sub.x in biochemical processes which includes a) isolating a liquid sample; b) adjusting the pH or ionic strength of the sample; c) recording mV values present in the sample after predetermined time periods; d) determining NO.sub.x concentrations in the sample at each of the predetermined time periods from the mV values; e) determining the difference in NO.sub.x in the sample from the NO.sub.x concentrations at each of the predetermined time periods; and f) determining the NO.sub.x concentration of the liquid sample from the difference in NO.sub.x and the predetermined time periods.
Abstract:
Apparatus which monitors and controls biological activity of wastewater under anaerobic, anoxic and aerobic conditions by measuring changes in dissolved oxygen content of the wastewater and/or cellular NADH. A wastewater treatment system is controlled in accordance with the results generated by the monitoring system.
Abstract:
A method for concentrating a fine coal slurry having an average particle diameter of 250 microns or less is provided in which the slurry is fed to a liquid-permeable membrane separator which provides a high rate of shear flow horizontal to the membrane. The feed may be heated to increase the flow rate, and crossflow across the membrane may be pulsed to prevent clogging of the membrane. Dispersant may also be added to improve the flow.
Abstract:
A four-cycle internal combustion engine having an intake and exhaust valve which operate in response to gas pressure generated in the engine cylinder during the operating cycle of the engine, rather than by external cams mounted on a camshaft. Pressure responsive control valves mounted on the cylinder admit fresh charges of air and fuel beneath the piston in the cylinder during its compression and exhaust strokes and the piston pumps these fresh charges back into the cylinder above the piston through the intake valve during the intake stroke, resulting in twice the air charge of a conventional engine. At the end of the power stroke another pressure responsive valve opens to relieve the pressure generated in the cylinder after ignition, to enable gas pressure previously generated in an air chamber above the cylinder and acting on the exhaust valve to open it to expel the burnt charge. The exhaust passage of the engine is also located so as to place the burnt gases in heat exchange relation with the fresh charge to preheat the charge, increasing the thermal efficiency of the engine.
