    摘要: A spark plug includes a center electrode, a ground electrode opposing the center electrode in such a manner as to define a spark discharge gap between the center electrode and the ground electrode, and an igniter fixed to at least one of the center electrode and the ground electrode in such a manner as to face the spark discharge gap. The igniter is composed of a metallic material whose principal component is one of a platinum and an iridium. One type of the metallic material of the igniter contains an oxygen content of not more than 120 ppm. Another type of the metallic material of the igniter has a crystal grain of not less than 50 μm in mean diameter, and contains the oxygen content of not more than 300 ppm.

    摘要: A spark plug used in an automotive internal combustion engine. The spark plug includes a center electrode. An insulator is disposed around the center electrode. A metal main body is disposed around the insulator. A ground electrode has a first end section connected to the metal main body, and a second end section located opposite to the center electrode. Additionally, a tip is formed of an alloy whose main component is Ir. The tip is secured to the ground electrode and serving as a spark consumption-resistant electrode material. The tip has an axis directed to the center electrode. In the spark plug, a molten and solidified section formed of alloy is disposed to fix the tip to the ground electrode. The molten and solidified section includes a surrounding molten and solidified section located surrounding a peripheral surface of a major part of the tip embedded in the ground electrode.

    摘要: In a spark plug insulator having a sintered ceramic body, the ceramic body has silicon nitride (Si.sub.3 N.sub.4), aluminum nitride (AlN) and alumina (Al.sub.2 O.sub.3), the weight ratio of aluminum nitride (AlN) and alumina (Al.sub.2 O.sub.3) to silicon nitride (Si.sub.3 N.sub.4) being in the range of 0.093 to 1.439; and at least one sintering additive is among the group consisting of yttrium oxide (Y.sub.2).sub.3), calcium oxide (CaO), lanthanum oxide (La.sub.2 O.sub.3), magnesia (MgO), cerium oxide (CeO.sub.2), scandium oxide (Sc.sub.2 O.sub.3), strontium oxide (SrO), barium oxide (BaO) and neodymium (Nd.sub.2 O.sub.3). The weight percentage of the sintering additive ranges from 0.3% to 15.0% of the total weight of the silicon nitride (Si.sub.3 N.sub.4), aluminum nitride (AlN) and alumina (Al.sub.2 O.sub.3).

    摘要: In a method of making a spark plug, a recess is provided on an end surface of the electrode blank metal. A straight neck portion is provided around the recess, and forming a tapered surface connecting from the straight neck portion toward an opposite side of the recess. A disc-shaped tip is placed in the recess of the electrode blank metal. The disc-shaped tip is pressed against an inner bottom of the recess in the axial direction of the electrode blank metal, and a laser beam welding is applied to an outer wall of the recess substantially all through its circumferential length by rotating the electrode blank metal.

    摘要: A spark plug includes a center electrode, a ground electrode, and a noble metal tip. The noble metal tip is joined to an object member of at least one of two electrodes via a fusion zone. A projected overlap region of the noble metal tip and the fusion zone accounts for 70% or more of a projected region of the noble metal tip. The object member contains at least Si out of Al and Si such that the amount of Si is 0.4% by mass or higher and such that the total amount of Al and Si is 0.5% by mass. Multi-fusion spots exist on the surface of the fusion zone. Segments of a baseline which pass through the respective multi-fusion spots have a total length of a predetermined percentage of the length of the baseline. Joining strength to the noble metal tip can thereby be greatly improved when the member to be joined contains Si.
