A composition comprises a polyester-polycarbonate polymer comprising isophthalate-terephthalate-resorcinol ester units and carbonate units, a first polyester selected from poly(ethylene terephthalate), poly(ethylene isophthalate), or a combination thereof, and a second polyester comprising butylene terephthalate units, cyclohexanedimethylene terephthalate units, or a combination of cyclohexanedimethylene terephthalate units and ethylene terephthalate units. The composition can be extruded into pellets that are clear and colorless. The composition can further be molded into articles having a percent haze value less than or equal to 10 percent, and total luminous transmittance value of greater than or equal to 70 percent, measured in accordance with ASTM D1003-00. Also disclosed is a method for forming the compositions, and articles prepared therefrom.

A luminescent solar collector is provided comprising a substrate and a light energy converter, such as a photocell, operatively connected thereto. The substrate is molded from a thermoplastic composition comprising a polymer and a fluorescent dye or quantum dot dispersed therein. The polymer comprises a polycarbonate unit and a polyester unit derived from the reaction of isophthalic acid, terephthalic acid, and resorcinol (ITR). In further embodiments, the substrate comprises two or more layers including a fluorescent layer and an overcoat layer. The fluorescent layer comprises the fluorescent dye or quantum dot and a polycarbonate polymer. The overcoat layer comprises the ITR unit. The substrate, in single layer or multiple layer form, has reduced haze levels over a prolonged period of time.

A method for making the phosphonium sulfonate salt of generic formula (1): wherein each X is independently a halogen or hydrogen, provided that the molar ratio of halogen to hydrogen is greater than about 0.90; p is 0 or 1 and q and r are integers of 0 to about 7 provided that q+r is less than 8 and that if p is not zero then r is greater than zero; and each R is the same or different hydrocarbon radical containing 1 to about 18 carbon atoms, the method comprising combining in an aqueous medium a compound of generic formula (2): wherein M is Li or Na, and X, q, p, and r are as defined above, with a stoichiometric excess of a compound of the generic formula (3): (R)4P-Z (3) wherein Z is a halogen and R is as defined above; and separating the product of formula (1) from the medium.
