    摘要: A receiver is configured to detect, at a communication interface, a received signal that suffers from degradations incurred over a communication channel. The receiver applies an adaptive filter to a series of received blocks of a digital representation of the received signal, thereby generating respective filtered blocks. The receiver calculates coefficients for use by the adaptive filter on an jth received block as a function of (i) error estimates associated with an (j−D−1)th filtered block, where D is a positive integer representing a number of blocks, and where j is a positive integer greater than (D−1); and (ii) delay compensation terms dependent on an estimate of a difference between coefficients used by the adaptive filter on an (j−D−1)th received block and coefficients used by the adaptive filter on an (j−1)th received block

    摘要: In a coherent optical receiver of an optical communications system, methods and systems for receiving a data signal x(t) modulated on an optical signal. A linearly polarized LO light is generated, which has a frequency of f1=f0±Δf, where f0 is a frequency of a narrowband carrier of the optical signal, and Δf corresponds with a band-width fB of the data signal x(t). The LO light and a received light of the optical signal are heterodyned on a photodetector. An analog signal generated by the photodetector is low-pass filtered to generate a filtered signal, using a filter characteristic having a sharp cut-off at a frequency of Δf+nfB, where n is an integer multiple. An analog-to digital (A/D) converter samples the filtered signal at a sample rate of 2(Δf+nfB) to generate a corresponding multi-bit digital sample stream. The multi-bit digital sample stream is digitally processed to recover respective In-Phase and Quadrature components of the received light of the optical signal.

    摘要: A transmitter generates determiners from data vectors representing payload information, each determiner representing parity information dependent on the payload information. The transmitter encodes the determiners to generate a nub vector representing compressed parity information dependent on the parity information, wherein the encoding is mathematically equivalent to calculating three or more forward error correction (FEC) codewords from the determiners and then calculating the nub vector from the codewords, at least one of the codewords being calculated from at least one recursion of a mathematical operation, and at least one of the codewords comprising more than 6 terms. The transmitter transmits signals representing the data vectors and the nub vector to a receiver, where recovery of the data vectors at the receiver involves sequential decoding of the FEC codewords, wherein at least one codeword decoded earlier in the decoding enhances an estimate of at least one codeword decoded later in the decoding.

    摘要: In a communications system having an analog channel configured to convey a data signal from a transmitter to a receiver, a method of mitigating narrow-band impairment imposed by the analog channel on the data signal within a bounded spectral region of a spectrum of the data signal. A transmitter digital signal processor (Tx DSP) applying a first adaptation function to the data signal prior to transmitting the data signal through the analog channel. A receiver digital signal processor (Rx DSP) applying a second adaptation function to the data signal received through the analog channel. The first and second adaptation functions are selected to cooperatively mitigate effects of the narrow-band impairment imposed by the analog channel.

Alternatively, a transmitter comprises a complex mixer to generate two I analog drive signals and two Q analog drive signals, and a single multi-dimensional multiple-electrode optical modulator configured to modulate an optical carrier light using the analog drive signals to produce a modulated optical signal for transmission. In both transmitters, the optical carrier light is produced by a single laser, and frequency components of the first data signal are located in a different portion of a spectrum of the modulated optical signal than frequency components of the second data signal.

    摘要: In a coherent receiver of an optical communication system, a method of processing a detected symbol estimate to determine a most likely value of a corresponding transmitted data word, the transmitted data word comprising one or more data bits encoded in a transmitter using a predetermined constellation of at least two symbols. A set of two or more virtual constellation points are define in a decision region corresponding to a possible value of the data word. The detected symbol estimate is processed to find a most likely virtual constellation point given the detected symbol estimate. The most likely value of the corresponding transmitted data word is determined based on the most likely virtual constellation point.

    摘要: A transmitter in an optical communications system includes a digital signal processor for processing a data signal to generate a sample stream encoding successive symbols in accordance with a constrained phase modulation scheme having a constellation of at least two symbols and a modulation phase constrained to a phase range spanning less than 4π. A digital-to-analog converter converts the sample stream into a corresponding analog drive signal. A finite range phase modulator modulates a phase of a continuous wavelength channel light in accordance with the analog drive signal, to generate a modulated channel light for transmission through the optical communications system. A receiver in the optical communications system includes an optical stage for detecting phase and amplitude of the modulated channel light and for generating a corresponding sample stream, and a digital signal processor for processing the sample stream to estimate each successive symbol of the modulated channel light.

    摘要: Upon receiving a communications signal conveying symbols at a symbol period T, a receiver applies filter coefficients to a digital representation of the communications signal, thereby generating filtered signals having a shape in the frequency domain characterized by a bandwidth expansion factor α, where components of the filtered signals correspond to angular frequencies ω = - π ⁡ ( 1 + α ) T ⁢ ⁢ … - π ⁡ ( 1 - α ) T , + π ⁡ ( 1 - α ) T ⁢ ⁢ … + π ⁡ ( 1 + α ) T . The receiver calculates first-order components from a first phase derivative of the components at a first differential distance, second-order components from a second phase derivative of the first-order components at a second differential distance, and composite second-order components from an average of the second-order components over multiple time intervals. Using the composite second-order components, the receiver calculates at least one of (i) an estimate of residual chromatic dispersion (CD) associated with the filtered signals, and (ii) an estimate of carrier frequency offset (CFO) associated with the filtered signals.
