This invention relates to the use of rapidly curable, non-degradable protective coating compositions containing a divinylether alkene or epoxide having the formula ##STR1## wherein Y is --CH.dbd.CH-- or ##STR2## R is hydrogen or methyl and x and x' are integers each having a value of from 0 to 24, a cross-linkable base resin and a catalytic amount of a cross-linking initiator; to provide a metal or plastic coating which possesses high resistance to solvents and improved flexibility.

Eutectic compositions of vinyl caprolactam (VCL) and divinyl imidazolidone (DVI) which are liquids at room temperature are described. These compositions are useful as reactive diluents in curable coating formulations.

Abstract:
This invention relates to a coating composition which can be cured by exposure to radiation energy in the presence of a cationic photoinitiator. The composition comprises a mixture of between about 1 and about 75 wt. % of a reactive vinyl or alk-1-enyl ether cyclocarbonate having the formula ##STR1## wherein R is hydrogen or lower alkyl; R' is C.sub.2 to C.sub.4 alkylene; n has a value of from 0 to 4 and n' has a value of from 1 to 4 and between about 99 and about 25 wt. % of a polymerizable compound containing an onium salt initiator which is normally insoluble in said polymerizable compound or a mixture thereof. The invention also relates to the use of the composition as a protective coating on a substrate.

This invention relates to alkenyl ether polycarbonates having the formula ##STR1## wherein A is selected from the group consisting of lower alkyl and R'HC.dbd.CHOR--; R and R" are each independently a divalent radical having from 2 to 20 carbon atoms and are selected from the group of alkylene, mono- or poly- alkoxylated alkylene, alkenylene, alkynylene, arylene, alkarylene and aralkylene radicals, which radicals are optionally substituted with halo, alkyl, cyano, nitro or alkoxy; R' is hydrogen or lower alkyl; (n) has a value of from 1 to 10 and (m) has a value of from 0 to 10; with the proviso that R" contains at least 3 carbon atoms when m is zero. The invention also concerns the preparation and use of said alkenyl ether polycarbonates.

This invention relates to aryloxy polyvinyl ethers having the formula ##STR1## wherein R is a radical having from 2 to 20 carbon atoms and is selected from the group of alkylene, alkyleneoxy alkylene, polyalkyleneoxy alkylene, arylene, alkarylene, alkarylalkylene and aralkylene; X is oxygen or sulfur; A is branched or linear alkylene having from 1 to 20 carbon atoms; B is halo or lower alkyl; n has a value of from 1 to 6 and p has a value of from 0 to 4. The invention also relates to the preparation and use of said aryloxy divinyl ethers.

Subject invention relates to alk-1-enyl ether silicates having the formula[X].sub.4-n Si[OR.sub.1 OCH.dbd.CH--R.sub.2 ].sub.nwhereinX is halogen or --OR wherein R is lower alkyl or a mixture of halogen and OR, a mixture of OR and hydrogen or a mixture of halogen and hydrogen;R.sub.1 contains from 1 to 8 carbon atoms and is alkylene, alkenylene, alkynylene, optionally alkoxylated with up to 20 units of ##STR1## wherein Y is hydrogen or methyl and R.sub.2 is each hydrogen or lower alkyl and n has a value of from 1 to 4. This invention relates to a cross-linkable, cationic radiation curable composition comprising (a) a non-volatile vinyl ether, epoxide, acrylate or an oligomer thereof (b) a cationic photoinitiator and (c) a divinyl ether polyacetal oligomer having the formula ##STR1## wherein n has a value of from 1 to 50;X is uniformly sulfur or oxygen;R is C.sub.2 to C.sub.4 alkeneoxy alkylene, poly(alkyleneoxy) alkylene, or a branched, linear or cyclic C.sub.2 to C.sub.20 alkylene andR' is phenylene, diphenylene methane, diphenylene propane, xylylene, tolylene, or a branched, linear or cyclic C.sub.2 to C.sub.20 alkylene optionally substituted with an ether, ester, carbonate, carbamate, C.sub.2 to C.sub.4 alkyleneoxy alkylene or poly(C.sub.2 to C.sub.4 alkyleneoxy) alkylene radical. The invention also relates to the composition cured on a substrate.

This invention relates to epoxy vinyl ethers having the formula: ##STR1## wherein R is a polyvalent linear, branched or cyclic hydrocarbon radical having from 2 to 20 carbon atoms, optionally substituted with alkylenoxy; n has a value of from 1 to 20; p has a value of from 1 to 6; and at least one of Y and Y' is ##STR2## which any remaining Y and Y' can be ##STR3## The invention also relates to the synthesis and uses of the above polyphenyl vinyl ethers.
