摘要： A high intensity discharge lamp (10) has an envelope (12) having a base end (12a), a middle portion (12b) and domed end (12c) arrayed along an envelope longitudinal axis (14). Two spaced apart electrical lead-ins (34, 36) are sealed in the base end (12a) and extend into the envelope (12). A substantially U-shaped frame (38) is within the envelope (12) and the U-shaped frame comprises glass tubing 26a. A light source (16) has an arc discharge capsule (16b) positioned within the frame (38) and a containment vessel (18) is spaced from and surrounds the arc discharge capsule 16b. The containment vessel (18) comprises a transparent structure (19) attached to the frame (38) and formed to provide multiple, independent, localized fractures capable of absorbing the given kinetic energy possessed by the shards.

摘要： A method of making a standard tool for calibrating polarimeters that analyze stress in photoelastic material, includes the steps of partially annealing a starting piece of tempered glass so that the starting piece has a retardance below 250 nm/cm, removing a peripheral portion of the starting piece (preferably, at least about 20% of its radial dimension) to leave a working piece, cutting a rectangular parallelepiped from the working piece, polishing two opposing faces of the rectangular parallelepiped where the two opposing faces are spaced apart by a measurement distance through which light passes during stress analysis in a polarimeter, and determining a birefringence of the rectangular parallelepiped across the measurement distance using a calibrated polarimeter. The standard tool is the rectangular parallelepiped having the determined birefringence for the measurement distance. The method can be used to make a set of the standard tools with different measurement distances.

摘要： A multi-purpose inflatable kite is presented that can be used as both a water flotation device and as an inflatable flyable kite. The multi-purpose inflatable kite includes a body formed of a gas-impervious material with a gas-tight fillable interior chamber. An openable aperture is connected with the body to enable filling of the interior chamber with a volume of gas. An attachment apparatus is integrally connected with the body, with a detachable wing connected with the attachment apparatus. When the interior chamber is filled with a gas and when the detachable wing is detached, the body can be utilized as a water flotation device. Alternatively, when the detachable wing is attached with the body, the body in conjunction with the detachable wing operates as a flyable kite.
