Abstract: A lightguide formed from a single substrate includes a substrate and a plurality of reflective structures disposed on the substrate. These reflective structures form one or more incouplers, exit pupil expanders, and outcouplers of the lightguide and are each configured to reflect light representative of an image. The lightguide also includes an effectively transparent overmold material disposed over the reflective structures that, together with at least a portion of the substrate, forms a first surface of the substrate. Further, the lightguide includes a second surface formed by removing at least a portion of the substrate via a material removal operation.

Abstract: A laser projection system is provided that includes at least one pickoff element or pickoff interface that redirects a portion of input laser light toward one or more photodetectors for purposes such as laser output power monitoring. An interface of a given pickoff element or a given pickoff interface uses Fresnel reflection to redirect the input laser light. The Fresnel reflection occurs due to a difference in indices of refraction between two materials that meet to form that interface. In some embodiments, a pickoff element is disposed in an optical path between a beam combiner and an optical scanner of the system. The pickoff element can be a plate beamsplitter, a cube beamsplitter, or a prism. In some embodiments, at least one pickoff interface is provided between two or more substrates of the beam combiner, the substrates that form a given pickoff interface having different respective indices of refraction.

Abstract: Systems, devices, and methods for accommodating multiple sets of laser light sources in an optical engine of a display system such as a laser projection system are described. Laser light beams may be combined via wavelength-, polarization-, and/or angular-separation-based techniques. First and second sets of laser light beams may be angularly separated such that different sets of partially overlapping pixels are projected by the system, thereby increasing the display pixel density and/or an expanding the field of view of the display. One or more laser die may be mounted to each submount of the optical engine. For embodiments with two laser dies on each submount, collimating lenses may introduce angular separation between laser light beams output by each pair of commonly mounted laser dies. A retroreflector prism may be disposed at a beam combiner to provide a compact extension of the optical path through the beam combiner.

Abstract: An optical device includes a light guide (LG) attached to a support component. Abstract: Display systems, such as near eye display systems or wearable heads up displays, may include a laser projector having an optical switch assembly disposed an at input to an optical scanner of the laser projector. The optical switch assembly includes at least one optical switch, and a controller selectively modifies the orientation of each optical switch to selectively change an angle at which laser light is directed onto a scan mirror of the optical scanner. Changing this angle shifts the scan region over which the scan mirror scans the laser light and, relatedly, shifts a region of a field of view of the display. In some embodiments, the controller is configured to modify the optical switch orientation(s) to correct non-idealities in the angle of the laser light.
