Abstract: A laser diode includes a semiconductor structure of a lower Bragg reflector layer, an active region, and an upper Bragg reflector layer. The upper Bragg reflector layer includes a lasing aperture having an optical axis oriented perpendicular to a surface of the active region. The active region includes a first material, and the lower Bragg reflector layer includes a second material, where respective lattice structures of the first and second materials are independent of one another. Related laser arrays and methods of fabrication are also discussed.

Abstract: A dual-beam optomechanical steerer includes first and second rotators mounted to a two-axis gimbal system. Each rotator is adjustable to control the azimuthal and elevation angles at which an optical transmitter affixed to the rotator transmits a beam of light. Thus, the two-axis gimbal system orients two optical transmitters identically while the first and second rotators orient the two optical transmitters independently with respect to the two-axis gimbal system. Examples of each rotator include a tip-tilt stage, goniometer, and rotation stage. Alternatively, a deflector may be used instead of each rotator. Examples of the deflector include an acousto-optic deflector, translatable lens, and Risley prism. The dual-beam steerer may be used to perform remote gas detection with two separate optical beams.

Abstract: Methods and systems for improved inspection, measurements, mapping, monitoring, and trending of underwater infrastructure that contains or are located in fluids, and/or that is difficult to access. The methods and systems include a housing containing a light source, a hollow core motor, a reflector, and a pressure tolerant window. The light source is disposed to pass output light along a path that passes through an axis of rotation of the hollow core motor to the reflector. The reflector rotates about the axis of rotation of the motor and operates to reflect the light at an angle to the rotation axis. In at least some embodiments, the light is passed through a full 360 degrees about the axis of rotation. The described methods and devices utilize one or more non-touch underwater optical system (including laser systems) for underwater equipment and infrastructure inspection, measurements, mapping, monitoring, trending, and maintenance.

Abstract: Examples are disclosed herein that relate to driving a resonant scanning mirror system using a linear LC resonant driving scheme. In one example, a resonant scanning mirror system includes a scanning mirror, first and second mirror drive elements, and a drive circuit to drive the scanning mirror at a resonant frequency. The drive circuit includes one or more signal sources configured to create a first source signal and a second source signal that is 180 degrees out of phase with the first source signal. The drive circuit further includes a buffer stage configured to receive the first and second source signals and output first and second drive signals, a first resonant LC stage configured to amplify the first drive signal for provision to the first mirror drive element, and a second resonant LC stage configured to amplify the second drive signal for provision to the second mirror drive element.
