A coaxial resonator comprising an outer conductor with closed and open ends, an inner conductor concentrically disposed in the outer conductor to establish a short circuit at the closed end and an open circuit at the open end, and a dielectric member mounted in the open circuit between the outer and inner conductors. An electrode is connected to the open circuit end of the inner conductor with a spacing from the dielectric member. A conductive plate, having a smaller surface area than that of the electrode but larger than the transverse cross-sectional area of the inner conductor, is provided between the dielectric member and the electrode. The dimensions of the conductive plate is appropriately chosen to accommodate frequency variations which might occur as a result of a connection with an external circuit.

In a double superheterodyne tuner for receiving TV channel signals, a frequency in a range defined between 2520 and 2700 MHz is selected as the first intermediate frequency, while the first intermediate frequency is obtained by subtracting a desired channel frequency from a first local oscillator frequency. The tuner comprises first and second mixing circuits respectively used for effecting frequency conversion, where each of these mixing circuits has parallel coupled lines so that each mixing circuit operates as a balance-to-unbalance transformer. The second mixing circuit further comprises a short-circuit line placed between the parallel coupled lines. The tuner also comprises a band pass filter having a band width less than 5 MHz, which selectively transmits the first intermediate frequency signal from the first mixing circuit.

A beam of diverging electromagnetic radiation of a predetermined frequency is transmitted to a target and the doppler shift of frequency of an echo due to relative movement of the target and a point of reception is detected conventionally by combining the frequency of the echo and the predetermined frequency. The number of cycles within the detected doppler shift frequency is counted to provide a delay to initiate measurement of doppler shift at a preselected angle of incidence of the echo. The effective area of measurement is thus restricted to a narrow region of the beam with the resultant high degree of precision.
